Hi, I just built a computer, and it doesn't work. The power comes one, the fan works, and the mobo turns on but that's about it. I have a radeon 8500 that i just installed. And I plugged in my monitor into it, but it doesn't show anything. My dvd and cdrw drive is not working as well. I plugged the master as my DVD drive and the slave for my CDrw. I also plugged in the cable from the power supply to each of the drives. THe question is, is there anything else that I might need to plug into the drives. And any suggestions on the monitor. I read in the manual that if you have a flat screen (which i do), I would have to add the piece (a connector) that was provided to make this work, and it still didn't. THanks

Well, a little clarification might help.. are you getting any beeps at boot time? (also make sure you have your pc speaker hooked up correctly, otherwise no beeps regardless!).. If so, then that is an indication that something is probably seated badly (mem, cpu, video).. otherwise, my first suggestion is to strip down your system to nothing but a cpu, memory, and video (no drives, sound card etc).. then see if you can boot and see anything at all.. if you can't get that to work, try reseating the necessary hardware (cpu, mem, video).. and try again. If it fails again, I suggest you get a hold of another video card (preferably pci) just to test to see if the mobo is dead or not..


From the info you give on your post, it seems like your powersupply might have died.. because regardless of whether the computer is fully functional or not, if you plug in the DVD/ CDROM etc drives, they'll at least turn on.. so you can eject the tray..but I would give what I said earlier a try .. might work..

Oh DCTM! I FEEL your pain!

Ditto Gonzo's advice: "strip down your system to nothing but a cpu, memory, and video" that means undoing all your cables and power connections, and leaving only the:
cpu
mobo
video card
ram

If your pc boots up, (I bet it will ) then add one component at a time. Good luck I bet you'll have it rocking in no time!
