Besides, ever heard of science fiction and fantasy? All it is is just a bunch of stuff that humans have never been exposed to at all, but somehow we can comprehend it and make it up, make wonderful stories about it.....sound familiar?

science fiction and fantasy? i can make up a story about spaceships and unicorns and wizards because I was taught by someone that they exist, just like the creators of those stories did.

One would say that those were created to explain the natural world around us - as well as most religions.

argh.

yes you were taught this by someone else but somewhere along the line someone created unicorns off the top of their head unless you really think they existed back then. in this case, a god could be created in the same way.

frankly, and this is just my really uneducated guess, i think that if you looked at the development of religion, it would be akin to watching operant conditioning of pigeons with random reinforcements.

Who the fvck made up Pokemon? Did Pokemon exist before whoever created it thought of it? No. Some dude just sat around and said, "Wow. i just thought of this creature that can shoot lightning and says pika pika." Did he learn this from elsewhere? Maybe God implanted the idea of Pokemon into his brain. If so God has a twisted sense of humor.

AFAIK, it was proven a long time ago that the only human instinct was the sucking on a mothers breast, everything else is learned.

I guess the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Etruskan and all other gods existed, as no one can make up stuff, no one has any kind of imagination.
Worshipping Mother Earth has been one of the oldest (if not the oldest), I guess that's the true religion.

Intel is not a company, it is a huge pink elephant the size of the earth who ejaculates over statues of Jesus. OMG! I said it, so it must be true, as I can't make such a thing up!

People have always been afraid of the unknown and have sought for explanations for it. A lot of religions used to have a god or at least higher being for everything they didn't understand, but it is hard to persist in such ideas if more explanations are found of the world around you. A single higher being doesn't give that problem, once you understand something you just ignore that part and go on saying he does the rest. Just like with the old religions it becomes part of the culture to believe, and no matter how dumb it gets after a while, no one wants to be an outcast in their culture, and therefor not many dare to change their views.

Just look at the Evolution vs Creationism thread that was started yet again. "Evolution is a theorie, not a fact, and therefor shouldn't be taught! And the Bible says the Bible is right, so that is a fact!" The only proof of the Bible is the Bibe itself, but people are afraid to actually think about it.

At least religion is an easy way to control the dumb masses.

OK, now that I see you're really serious about this, I can't believe you can muster the brain cells to work a computer if you honestly think this way. You're saying that people cannot think up new things that they previously had no concept of?
How do you explain that computer you're banging on? Was it always there? Or did a series of innovations and original ideas lead to its development?

Jesus came in a vision and said "Hey, look at this great new machine I made for looking at porn!"

Depends on how you view the computer's development... was it the combination of a television and a typewriter? An early version of a writing tablet?

I think a line from Contact (one of my fav movies btw) applies here somewhat...this is just paraphrased but jodie foster says that what if we just created god so that we wouldn't have to feel so alone?

it makes perfect sense to me. i mean really...you have to sit and wonder how many species in the universe actually get a chance to evolve as much as we have. for all we know we may be alone. religion fills this void I think.

this brings up another philosophical question as well...does love have anything to do with religion or spirtuality? or is it merely chemicals and electrical impulses in the brain working in harmony? do we really have a soul, or is this another thing we have created to fill some void?

i'm tellin ya. philosophy is not something i would want to do for a living. no answers, only more questions :p

It's beautiful. I'm just a weekend philosopher, something I do with my friends over a beer at 2AM... but even when I'm on my own contemplating and writing... it's so amazing.

There's so much of the universe that we don't know. It's in our future, both as individuals and as a race, to explore maybe just a small part of that.

God, I sound like a commercial for NASA.

Considering the percentage of dumb people that is not surprising.

What was the poll taken? That the percentage of people who believe the earth is less than 6000 years old increases as overall education level decreases?

thats what i mean... the person who thought up a unicorn might have seen a rhinocerous one day, and a horse the next, and decide that a horse with a horn would be cool. did this person actually invent something new? not imo... they just put a couple things together and made a new thing. this thought process can be applied to anything. i am just bringing up a thought i had, not rewrite the workings of the universe.

You said it yourself... "This thought process can be applied to anything." God or unicorns, it's all the same by this logic :)

A lot of things are simply combinations of other ideas, yes, but discoveries are made. Go look into surrealist art. People do have imaginations.

i was trying to prove that you cant really invent something new, just modify it, or make changes to it... i am not saying that what i have said is 100% truth, but until you talk about something like this with a bunch of people, how can your views mature?

just as someone could have made little clay people, and thought "what if i'm just a little clay person"

Everything we do, in some form or fashion, is influenced by our upbringing, our culture, and the people we associate with. Surrealist art is unique, yes, but it is still influenced by every day occurrences.

If we can't invent anything, how is there anything to modify?

i think of it as the theory of evolution, but with our knowledge. one generation, you can see that a bird has a particular bone structure, the next generation will not be completely different (a completely new idea). it will have changed a little bit. and what do evolutionists believe? that our whole world stemmed from one little thing, big bang, whatever you want to call it. i can view this as one little thought, that grew into what we know today.

For example, the beginnings of a thought might be in the mind of a person in one generation. but it might take some more generations for the thought do develop more. make sense?
