EDIT: Nevermind, I couldn't program it myself anyway since you'd need 2 working remotes to DIY. The dealer has a service key to get around that problem...

When I bought my RX8, I only got 1 key and 1 spare. I saw on EBAY this listing (http://tinyurl.com/rx8key) for a key + remote combo. The remote would need programming, and I can get the key cut at a hardware store.

Is there any chance that I'd damage the car by trying to program the remote myself? FWIW - Mazda wants $500 to program/cut the key for me. I don't really need the key, but I would be screwed if I ever lost my wallet, since I keep the key in there.

I don't like not having the piece of mind of another key if I lose this one.

i dont think u can damage the car, after all there are plenty of people who's programmer the car on their own.

i can't believe they charge you $500 for the key, the one in queens charges $60 for a mazda3 key if i program myself, and $100 if they do it. i was like no and started to find various cheap keys on ebay/deal extreme and see how they work. so far the key for mazda6 doesn't seem to work, then i bought one for my year and model, we will see how it will work after it arrives.

Which one in Queens? I went to Koepell (which is usually pretty good) and I got quoted $350 + $90 to program. I figured after tax it would be around $500. I might man up and pay it during my next oil change.

That sounds a bit much, a replacement VW key is like 350 including programming. I can't imagine the Mazda one being more than that.

I dunno. Maybe because my car has a keyless ignition? That's the only reason I can think of. There is another dealer here in the Bronx, but they SUCK bigtime.

The dicks parked my friends car in the street and curbed his rim and said it was there already.

The metal flaked off when they inspected it too. LOL

A quick call to corporate should have fixed that. I had a rubbing noise in my passenger window on my TDI and the dealer close to my work (I hate them but its convenient) said that it was operating normally the two times I took it there to have them look at it.

I emailed my contact at VWOA and low and behold the next day the service dept manager called me back apologizing PROFUSELY and offering me a free rental while they looked at it and everything.
