Let Bush Have It

If Bush doesn't get the most votes, you'll continually hear about how the election was "stolen". And how the hand counts (with both Republicans and Democrats) were full of "mischief".

And more stuff like this from CNN:

<< Protesters yelled for police to arrest a Democratic attorney, Joe Geller, accusing him of walking out of the tabulation room with a ballot in his back pocket.
More than a dozen police officers surrounded Geller and led him inside the building to safety. He said later he had a ?training ballot? used to show people how to count votes.

?It is clearly marked ?training ballot.? I wouldn?t have taken something from elections officials that I wasn?t supposed to have in front of a room full of screaming Republicans,? he said.
>>

Too many people are just plain overreacting.

tagej,

I am of Spanish heritage, raised Catholic, from a family who is conservatively Democratic (think: FDR) married to a very WASP-y, right wing, Republican family.

This is the first time I have voted in over 8 years because I was under so much pressure NOT to vote anything other than Republican. So, this time, I vote, and vote my conscience... whether or not anyone agrees should make no difference. It doesn't make me a bad person or a stupid person, just a person coming from a different set of experiences.

However, my life has been rather tense to say the least ever since Election Day. Things have been getting worse since last night, and let me tell you Thanksgiving is going to SUCK this year. Mind you, I won't be saying anything. I was taught that it isn't polite to discuss religion and politics, so I try not to. I will just be listening to the hatred and anger directed toward all the idiots like me and my family of origin.

All I can say is that it is a very unpleasant experience to be hated because of differing ideologies and basically, ethnic background. Oh, and they can say they don't hate 'me' all they want. It still hurts and angers me.

Really, I never cared if Bush or Gore won, but if Gore wins, my torture will continue indefinitely. I'd rather Bush win and let all this mudslinging (and resentment) in my general direction end.

My advice to anyone who is reading this? Don't marry out of your race, your "party", or your religion, and God forbid do NOT do all three! Because it does matter, and it will hurt you.

Rant over... time to cry in tea...

Isla:

At least if you suffer for voting your conscience, you suffer for the right reasons. Try to take some measure of solace in that. There was once a Jewish young man who got crucified for "voting" his conscience. The Word understands :)

Pontius Pilate had a conscience until it got risky for him. Classic politician. Unfortunately, I fear that he bears a strong resemblance to everyman.

A quote from prominent Democratic mouthpiece, Paul Begala:

<< "Yes . . . tens of millions of good people in Middle America voted Republican. But if you look closely at that map [showing states won by George W. Bush in red] you see a more complex picture. You see the state where James Byrd was lynched--dragged behind a pickup truck until his body came apart--it's red. You see the state where Matthew Shepard was crucified on a split-rail fence for the crime of being gay--it's red. You see the state where right-wing extremists blew up a federal office building and murdered scores of federal employees--it's red. The state where an Army private who was thought to be gay was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat, and the state where neo-Nazi skinheads murdered two African Americans because of their skin color, and the state where Bob Jones University spews its anti-Catholic bigotry: they're all red too." >>

Good to see that the Democratic party would never say anything inflamatory and hateful. America is blessed to have such kind and compassionate people defending the Republic...er...DEMOCRACY.

Red,

I doubt you'll ever be in charge of anything larger than Apu's Corner Store, so we radical, right-wing, reactionary Republicans have little to fear.

The last few posts help make my point in the original post in this thread.

And we are way off topic....

I've been trying to stay out of the recount discussions. I expressed my views earlier as to why I think Gov. Bush would be the better choice for president. I was willing to debate the issues with most.
I don't see much need to debate what is curently going on in Florida. It is out of our hands and will be decided by the courts and legislatures.

I'm glad what discussions that are going on are staying on such a high level though.

Red,

I don't give two flips what you say about me. You are the master of vicious personal attacks. You just can't handle it when anyone else stands up to you. I have yet to see you use any rational arguments just the endless invective. I have loads of fun revving you up. Keep it coming.

<< Nasty rhetoric >>

Unbelieveable. And to think the right-wingers are solely responsible.

Reminds of a pot calling a kettle "black".

I will gladly allow you to wear the crown of "Master of Vicious Retaliation." In fact, I in no way care to possess that title.

As to standing up to you. Bring it on. Consider yourself challenged. Anything you bring, I can handle.

Isla - take heart, the intolerance of family-in-law can be harsh.

I would have to offer a different opinion and experience to the interracial marriage thing.

To me, it is both wonderful and good, but it can come with many burdens. I am a British-Canadian (Canuck born to Brits) caucasian married to a born and bred hispanic girl from Latin America (she lived there until Universtity, where we met), and our marriage is made even better because of our cultural and racial differences. The key is that the people we are makes us embrace and celebrate each other's culture. You should have seen me pass out from heat on Christmas day down on the equator one year, and you should see my wife running through the snow up here in Canada!

Honestly, we have been blessed in that both my family and hers have been wonderfully accepting and open to both of us, and we all get along very well. Also, politically and faith-wise, we are all on the same page, and that is a big help.

But honestly, we also realize and take comfort in the fact that she knows that if my family or friends ever even remotely started anything, even a glance - I would give them such hell! I would honestly be willing to forsake my parents, my family, my home country... ANYTHING for her. And she feels the same way for me. That is the strength and commitment I would say is necessary to work with the obstacles of a mixed marriage.

I'm not posting this to claim to have a perfect marriage, or to brag or anything of the sort! I just felt I should say that an interracial marriage can be hard work and requires a specific understanding and commitment, but it is a wonderful thing, and should not be avoided because of these burdens.

Have you spoken with your husband about the way his family makes you feel? (Wow, I'm sounding Ann Lander's-ish!)

Um hmm.....that's what I thought, turn tail and run.

I just don't have anything better to do at the moment.

I'm not trolling for insults. I'm just passing the time.

Isla,

I am genuinely troubled that political differences are interfering with what should be a happy family time. If you are getting grief from Republican in-laws, it is not because they are Republican, it is because they are dickheads. Feel free to point them at this post.

My thanks, especially to those who may have voted differently from me but realize that it doesn't really matter, ultimately.

Ah, Optimus... It is a little bit different here in the South. You will just have to trust me on that... it's a Southern thing. :) I have heard others who have experiences like yours, so I am encouraged. To Mr. Isla's credit, he does make a lot of effort to rise above the bigotry. Marrying me was in some ways a form of rebellion, so more power to him! :D Some of his family members are better than others when it comes to saying hurtful things. Most of the time I just laugh at the things they say, and chalk it up to ignorance.

So, happiness and blessings to all this Thanksgiving (wherever you live, whenever you celebrate it). That includes my fellow Americans who voted differently from me.

Peace~

Isla - very much understood... and remember this holiday when they start:

THEY ARE WRONG.

Remember that and anything they say will lose some of its bite, hopefully. :)

"Too many people are overreacting" The interesting question is why. What does this imply about us? Why do we have teams and attach our passions to them?

Because these are serious questions, my experience tells me they are questions almost nobody is interested in. The really fun (easy)thing is to get into the frey and swing away. Since, however this pains some of you so much (Isla here in particular), maybe I can switch out of my funner hold up an opposing mirror game, and say what I see that makes this easer, at least for me, to handle. I have the same Republican family, on my side as you Isla. Not just Republican, but active politically in the party.

Well the answer to where all the passion is comming from is the same as the answer to everything. It is a matter of personal identification. Here it is in the thumbnail, because you already have heard this fleshed out elsewhere. We hate ourselves, don't know it and don't want to know it. In order to attain some measure of self worth, since we are cut off from the only place where we can find true self worth, God or the True Self, however you prefer, we attach ourselves to outside things, religions, political parties, nations, isms of all kind. The stature these things have gained become our substitute self worth. I am of the true religion, the right party. I am one of the good guys. Threaten that and you threaten to awaken to awarness how bad I feel about myself burried deep in the past.

You might think that the worse the feelings of worthlessness are, the more hateful the person who is threated with awareness would be, but it isn't just that. It matters how much the external thing is the cover for the real feeling, and how close to the surface the feeling is. This is what we mean when we talk of people having buttons you can push.

The tough part is trying to find some pease in a mad world. Your family is sick, but so are you and so am I. In trying to save themselves from feeling their own sense of worthlessness, the make you feel yours. Somewhere inside, you will find a desire to do the same to them. We are all the same. You can do nothing about other people. That is their curse and their responsibility. All you can ever change is yourself. By voting your conscious, you voted correctly. The hatred and anger that some will throw at you for that is exactly the same hatred and anger they have chained their true self with. We crucify ourselves.

If you can remember that everything that is wrong with the world is in your own head, the fact that you don't like yourself, you can maybe just maybe add a little less to the total mass of hate in the world, pass on down to your kids just a little less. We have real work to do to cough up and vomit the lies were taught, that we are bad, but meanwhile I think it helps to remember that we are all the same, and that our true selves, below the self hate, are those beautiful babies we were born as, beings with infinite potential in every direction.
