What's the big deal? Either the ex-criminal will still be a criminal when he/she gets out, and will just get a firearm no matter the law, or, he/she won't be a criminal and should be able to have one. I don't see the problem.
Well I do but I can pretend not to. Logically a felon who has served his time is debt free and should have the same rights as any other free person. If folks are worried he might recommit they should do something about recidivism rates within the penal system by doing a better job with rehabilitation. The chance that would happen are practically nil, especially in conservative states.
Rehab sounds cool until one attempts to pull it off close to effectively on a mass prison scale in our prison culture. Seems to me the time to make them not criminals in nature is before they're criminals in nature.
