Lens Shafters: Good-bye

My current pair of prescription glasses from lens Crafters seem to be performing at 1/4-1/3 the level that previous purchases from the same outlet. I usually replace glasses every 4-5 years, and I am told the current pair of glasses use the exact same material as the last pair.

Yet, the amount of scratches on the current pair are the equivalent to what I'd expect after 2.5-3 years of use--except these are less than six months old. I've already had them replace the lenses once, but they will not do it again.

First, Lens Crafters suggested I change the way I clean the classes. Ok, but if my current method of cleaning didn't have this accelerated effect on my last pair of glasses using the exact same material ...

Still, using their method made not one bit of difference. And the cynical me has to wonder if this is how Lens Crafters is handling their economic situation by insuring the lenses becomes unusable at a much quicker rate.

At this point, I will not be using Lens Shafters (ahem, Crafters) again. I've been wearing prescription eyewear since I was five years old (now 45), and I know when something unusual is about in the glasses I'm wearing.

Anyone else seem to think something drastically has changed, and in a negative for the consumer? What good is an anti-scratch coating is mild cleaning, even using the Shafter's method, means scratches will occur and quickly.

I was sick of lenscrafters 10 years ago.

i used Lenscrafters 10yrs ago. service was pretty good.

then i switched to walmart for cheaper prices. i was surprised the eye glass store was not walmart, but an independant chain. service was still good.

then i found:
zenni
39dollarglasses
eyebuydirect
goggles4u
etc

complete pair of glasses w/Transitions for $35 shipped!!!!!!!!!!! (zenni)

no more worrying about breaking or scratching. just buy another pair

I get mine replaced every year and I haven't used lensshafters in forever. The quality there vs. price paid just isn't there, but if you need a pair in a pinch their 2 hour service (if they still do that) is great.

I have been wondering for months how your eyewear has been performing. Thank you for the update! I shall alert all my friends via Facebook on your status. They eagerly await the news.

How do you people buy glasses online without knowing what they look like on you? Seems like a bad idea.

are these prescription glasses? I've been looking for a cheaper option than getting glasses from my optometrist. They will not let me get new glasses unless I get an exam(they claim I should come in every year for an exam) as well, and my prescription has not changed in 8 years, according to them.

If your vision is stable [hasn't changed in years] and you don't have any eye health issues [i.e. cataracts or glaucoma], then go to another optometrist.

If you DO have issues relating to the health of your eyes, you're a fool for going to an optometrist instead of an ophthalmologist.

Optometrists only want to sell you new glasses. Ophthalmologists generally do not sell glasses.

My wife's new glasses just arrived yesterday from zennioptical. Prescription sunglasses. $18, shipped. They look awesome on her, match her prescription, etc.

Tip for ordering online: measure the width of your current frames. (hopefully you own a ruler or tape measure.) If you're that anal retentive about it, 5 minutes with paintshop or something should tell you how they'll look - pick frames that match your current glasses for width, resize the picture of the new frames so they match your current frames, and slide that picture over a picture of your face (scaled the same amount.)

All, I have seriously considered zennioptical before, but a couple of things need to come to mind. First, I like RayBan frames and this wasn't something they offered. I do not mind paying for frames, and actually use to buy brand sunglasses and had prescription lenses put in them.

Now, Lens Shafters refuses to do this. But more importantly, its not necessarily the price, but the lens material they claim is the same and that cannot be the case. I am using the highest refraction index media as I have a strong nearsided prescription, but they claim its the same material as in my last pair from them and it took 4-5 years to get the scratch-wear as the new glasses got in 4-6 months. Something ain't kosher, here.

Also, as someone pointed out buying into a frame you cannot see in person before purchase is a risk. Then there is fitting of the glasses. By the time i add up it starts to become a smaller purchase ($$), but then I am having to settle for frames I really don't want and an unknown in the mail to deal with.

Zenni is great if you can find a frame you like. Just got mine for $25 total with polycarbonate and anti-glare. Can't beat them for $25...
