Lenovo G570 for mom having hinge problems....Lenovo warranty joke.....

Well, it's not a total joke, but last year here.......

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2179085

I got mom a Lenovo G570 for her Bday. She had an HP that literally came apart at the hinges after the hinges had already severed a power wire causing me to have to replace the LCD. I thought, I wasn't going thru that again, so I went with the Lenovo. Ugly, but supposedly rugged.

Well, I can't say she was rough with it at all. It's never left her living room with rare exception and she handles it like.....well......like it's new. (which it is)

Right hinge (looking at the screen) is getting waay loose and I can't figure out exactly why without taking it apart, which I'm not gonna do under warranty.

Anywhooo...........long story short, I got a bunch of warranty repair houses listed for her in the L.A. area (per Lenovo website) and they all told her they can't work on her model of Lenovo. WTF???

Are you F'n kidding me??

So now she has to send it to Texas. (whatever) But, heck, not being able to work on a basic sandy bridge, 15" laptop? Who are these people??

DO NOT BUY LENOVO!!!!!

It sounds like something she is doing, honestly those laptops are the same basic laptops we have on campus (one gen older though) and they are tough.

And I'd almost agree with that, except that this thing's already reeeeally loose. (like it broke or something) And there is literally no physical sign of damage on the plastic (which I'd assume one would see if the plastic wasn't completely broken in that corner).

I have a Dell 600m that I still use to this day that still works flawlessly.

I also have a D600 (same laptop on the Latitude side) that my wife uses (daughter's now) and recently replaced a hinge on that one as it just bit the dust. Both laptops used identically the same way.....(to plug iPods into mostly)

Parents and electronics = trouble. 😉 Or maybe it's just women....LOL. Doh!!

Wow.....just got an email from my mom that 2 different places told her that there is a $100 carry in charge.

I told her to just forget it and send it into Texas for Lenovo warranty service. Amazing. Why even list warranty repair houses then?

It sounds like she needs a panasonic toughbook. These (consumer lenovo, hp etc) are delicate notebook computers with a emphasis on saving weight.

She can't use the hinge as if it were a steel door. I know people that are pretty rough on their electronics but it never got this bad unless they dropped it and the cracked plastic compromised the structural integrity.

Or a business Lenovo (Thinkpad) for better support and less cost than a Toughbook. Though not as extremely durable as a toughbook, business class notebooks --even HP's Elitebooks or Dell's Latitudes-- should hold up very well. I gave my mom a used R61i a year ago and my nieces and nephews abuse the crap out of it. But it is still holding up like a champ, hinges and all.

Used Thinkpads are usually a great, inexpensive choice, even without warranty. Go new for warranty purposes if you must, but be prepared for the cost.

If you read the fine print of the warranty, it's most likely a depot only warranty. It's cheaper for Lenovo to have all the parts in one facility and for the repair to happen there. They are charging a $100 fee in the shop because they are just going to overnight the computer to the texas facility because most likely, they can't get parts for it.

She's obviously doing something wrong.
Close to same issue with 2 different brands lends one to think that mom is doing something wrong. She's either dropped it, or what I see a lot of people carrying the laptop with one hand on the base, and the other on one corner of the screen. This causes the screen to torque and will mess up hinges and done enough can start to hollow out the hole the retaining screw is in.

Lenovo warranty isn't a joke if you actually buy a thinkpad level machine. We get next business day onsite fixes (if part is in stock)

I see so many people on campus do this. It makes me cringe. D:

OP, I do think the problem here is probably your mom being a bit too rough on the hinges. Maybe she constantly opens and closes the lid, opens and closes it too abruptly (too quickly), let the laptop fall, or sometimes does the unthinkable and handles the laptop by the display lid. Whatever it may be, you should sort it out with the warranty and after the laptop comes back you NEED to educate her on how to make the hinges last longer.

FYI, you need to buy a pro-sumer or small business laptop at the min. these days to get metal hinges and very high build quality. The cheapest rugged laptop is the ThinkPad X130e, which starts at $450.

Ya, I can't rule it out. I remember having to send mine to Dell (though Dell was pretty bomb about it, sending me return boxes and rushing there & back) in Texas and it was pretty painless, so hopefully she'll have the same luck w/ Lenovo.

I just thought it funny that they suggest "local warranty repair facilities" only to have them stiff ya for $100. Why bother?

Anywhooooo..........we'll give it a once around, then if she blows it after that, I'll take out a 2nd on the house and get her a Toughbook.

Thanks for that tip, I like what I see in the X130e, but the price is wrong. The cheapest one with an Intel CPU is $670. Even then, that's a 1.4Ghz ULV.

Price depends on where you look, but that Intel CPU is more than 2x faster than the AMD. It's a Sandy Bridge dual-core with Hyper-Threading. To many that justifies the price difference right away. If you look around, the price definitely isn't $670. The same config. as on Lenovo's site, minus 2GB of RAM ($20) is available for $580 on B&H, $90 less. Add the RAM and it's still $70 less than on Lenovo's site.

If you want something in the $500 range then there's the version with the Sandy Bridge Celeron Dual-Core for $510 on Provantage. That CPU is still almost 2x fast as the AMD E-450, so it's still a huge step up.

Take into account that's a laptop that can handle a 5-foot drop just fine provided it's on Sleep.

That one at Provantage, doesn't seem to include the webcam and microphone built-in that is advertised at Lenovo's site. That's a pretty big omission.
I think I would rather get the $670 one off of Lenovo.com, with the i3 with HT, and the webcam and mic, rather than $510 for the one from Provantage.

Same problem as other posters. Loose hinge lifting plastic case on rear right corner of machine. Very obvious. Sent in for repair. Lenovo wants to replace everything because of unrelated non-issue. They are just ducking the problem with the hinge by trying to redirect the conversation to a non-problem (liquid spill). If liquid spill were issue, laptop would not boot up and run. BUT IT DOES boot up and run fine. No issues with MB or circuitry at all. Just damn loose hinge.
Lenovo Model 433432j (I am located in Japan). Clearly Lenovo customer service is in need of major change. Right now a very negative experience.

Too bad, used to be a trusted name. Now no service, no trust, no more purchasing by me. Farewell Lenovo, you have failed the trust test.

I have one of these laptops too. The build quality is pitifully bad. One of the screen hinges is loose in my G570 too. The screw fell out. This laptop has been sitting on my desk, no reason why this problem should occur. I contacted lenovo, who told me that I would have to send the brand new laptop to them at my expense. Having looked on their forums and seen customers with similar problems with the same laptop being either fobbed off or quoted a repair charge, I can safely say the impression I've gotten is that the lenovo warranty is nothing more than an in joke of the company and something which they have no real intention of honouring.

In short, buy lenovo at your own risk. When a problem will, inevitably, occur the company will hold you responsible regardless of whether it was caused by user accident/mistreatment or simply by POOR BUILD QUALITY.

FWIW, mom got her laptop back after about a month turnaround. They had to wait for new hinge from china (hopefully revised). So far so good but I suppose time will tell.

My G570 bought last year now has hinge issues. This one you can not repair it yourself because the little tiny screw holder for the left hinge broke off. This screw holder is attached to the main body. You have to replace the whole casing!

If you look around Lenovo forums there is a lot of people who has the same issue. I can still open and close the lid on mine but its only a matter of time before the it breaks completely.

If you still have a G570 be careful. I only bought this model because Fry's is selling it for $269.

Update:

I'm guessing mom didn't want to tell me but she got an ipad for Christmas so she can at least be online and do stuff but I noticed in an email she sent my wife that her laptop wouldn't take a charge.

So today we're taking my sister out for her birthday and notice her laptop is NOT well!!!

Hinge is toast...YET AGAIN...and her charger is definitely hosed as the brick is blinking yellow and not the constant blue. I told her this is unacceptable and will now take over the duties of resolving this.

I have the 2nd year with my Costco Amex (though laptop was bought at office depot) but I am going to give someone an earful about this laptop if I don't get a seriously gracious response. I've heard of Amex telling folks to keep the faulty item and issuing full credit but then I'll still have to pull my mother's stuff off her laptop as she doesn't back up very well and then I'm gonna buy her a friggin Fujitsu Lifebook and call it a day. Lenovo just lost my business, forever!

Ok, so I called Lenovo today. What a joke!

Let me repeat.....LENOVO IS A JOKE!!!

They have a design flaw in this laptop (and any others made like it) and they will not admit to it. My mom explained how she treated this thing like a Faberge egg since back from repair and this thing is FUBAR'D!!!

I escalated until I got to someone who said they "Can't fix it because its out of warranty and out of repair warranty by 6 months).

I explained that to improve his job performance he should always use the word "won't" and not "can't" cuz they're 2 different words. He didn't like that so he said, "aren't able" and I corrected him again.

In short, after I ate up about 30 minutes of his time for the 30 minutes they ate of mine before I got escalated to him, I reminded him that if I was his brother, or father, this would be a non-issue. There was a lot of silence once he had no way out of the conversation.

I have his employee number and will revisit on Monday, causing telephone turmoil at Lenovo for which, at the very least, they will wish they just fixed the fvcking thing or even just gave me a different laptop.

DO NOT BUY LENOVO!!! (and yes, I have a polar opposite story of how I was helped by dell several years ago)

You tried to explain the difference between "won't" and "can't" to the dude on the phone? You sound like a douchebag and that's probably why you're not getting much help. Act nicer to the CS reps on the phone and you'll be surprised what they're willing to do for you.

Been there done that.

How long have you been a CSR? 😉
