Lenovo G470 keeps shutting down spontaneously when playing internet videos

Hi,

I've a 1 week old Lenovo G470 that I've recently discovered keeps shutting down spontaneously when playing facebook/youtube videos. This happens regardless whether I'm using battery or connected to the AC power.

My G470 has a i5-2410M with 8GB memory, ATI Radeon 6370M and is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Has any one experienced similar problems? If so is there a fix?
 
Check if the internal fan kicks in, it could be heat related. If it is still under warranty send back to manufacturer to have it fixed.

Yes the fan does kick in sometimes, though I haven't noticed if it kicks in when it shuts down. I guess I'll install Speedfan or something to monitor the temps.
 
The fan kicks in a lot actually. Just checked the temps with Core Temp...they're about 46-47C. Then I played a facebook video for 20s before it shutdown suddenly. Temperature was still about that...didn't go up any higher. Can't be overheating then?
 
Easy thing to do is take out the battery and run it like that to see what happens. I've seen a bad battery do LOTS of weird battery-unrelated things lol.

Also couldn't hurt to run memtest86 on it either. Just a couple easy things to try. Good luck!

Edit: You could try 'safe mode w/networking' and see what happens as well.

Also, is the machine simply 'powering off' or going thru an orderly shutdown routine?
 
I have an integrated Intel Motherboard with an E7200 Intel CPU and it does not ever spontaneously shut down. The culprit could be something like the video settings or some bad RAM or a bad power supply or corrupt drivers or something Operating System Related. The only real problems I encounered is if I selected video on my HDTV with too intensive of video resolution, it would cause the video to go out occassionally. Adjusting video resolution on the TV fixed the problem. If you overdrive the video it will cause problems.

Good advice. I deal with Lenovo support around 2 times a week for hw failures. They'll have you on the phone forever running this and that tests and diagnostics. The more you do up front/yourself, the less monkeying around you'll have to do later.

Like I mentioned in the original post, this happens regardless whether I'm using battery or connected to the AC power. When I'm connected to AC, the battery is removed. The system just suddenly shuts down, it doesn't go through the shutdown process. The screens go blank suddenly, and then in 1-2 seconds, the LEDs and fans turn off.

I'll try safe mode with networking. I guess I'll also try using the integrated graphics instead of the discrete graphics.

I've tried Lenovo's online chat support. They basically just blamed either driver conflict or OS problems, and told me to perform a full recovery to restore it to the default factory settings. I'm probably gonna do that anyway since I will be upgrading the HDD to an SSD, but they weren't much help!
 
OK, I've tried safe mode. Played a few videos that would normally shutdown the system - no problem.

Tried to use switchable graphics to switch to the integrated HD3000 graphics, but couldn't find it in the driver settings. Guess it doesn't support after all. While I was at it, I updated the ATI drivers, but that didn't solve the problem either - experienced shutdowns after that still.
