Lending a friend my car...

A friend wants to borrow my car for the weekend.. He's a reliable guy and has been driving for longer than I am... I'm just a little worried about insurance... I've always thought that the car is insured, not the driver - if he was driving the car and someone smacked into him would we be covered? We're both 24..

Thanks!

He would be covered and the insurance company would know that you are sharing your car, if he gets in an accident.

You're right....insurance follows the car, not the driver. As long as you're car is covered, you're good. However, if he has insurance on his own car, you can always argue about it later. The way things usually work out is that he would need to pay the deductable to get your car fixed and I'm not sure what would happen to your rates in that case.

So if insurance covers the car and not the driver why does the insurance company need to know if anyone else besides the policy holder will be driving the car?

for rate calculations. rates are somewhat based on the driver.

From what I've heard, if you give your friend permission to drive your car, they're covered under your insurance policy.
