Leipzig: Sony officially announces PSP-3000

Sony has taken the opportunity of the Leipzig Games Convention to reveal the brand-spanking new PSP-3000, arriving Oct 15 in Europe for ?199 (around $250), according to our main man Jem Alexander who's currently on site at the press conference.

Though it will look the same as the PSP-2000 (that's what the pic above is of, actually), you can expect an improved screen that's better outside with no glare and a built-in mic. This jibes with rumors we've heard previously, but we don't know if the new "PS Button" is part of the package. We'll keep you posted.

SCEE president David Reeves announced at the company's Games Convention press conference that the PSP-3000 would being shipping this Fall, boasting new hardware features over the current PSP Slim and Lite. Featuring a built-in microphone, a new, brighter LCD screen and Skype out of the box, the PSP-3000 is expected to ship to Europe in October.

Visually, the new PSP 3000 is nearly identical to previous iterations.

It will ship with eight bundles, with pack-ins featuring Harry Potter, Buzz Master Quiz and more. Each bundle will be priced at 199 Euros.

Coming this fall in the USA

We also unveiled at Leipzig an updated PSP system (PSP-3000), which we?ll be offering here initially through the previously announced Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack and a new PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack. I?m personally excited about the 4GB Memory bundle because we?re including a - you guessed it - 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, which is the biggest Memory Stick we?ve ever bundled with a PSP. Similar to the new PS3 model, this PSP bundle is the result of the current consumer usage model - where more and more of you are finding that extra memory space is crucial. Check out the press release here for more details on what?s included in the bundles.

The new PSP retains the size and features of the current, slimmed-down PSP (PSP-2000), while incorporating some hardware updates:

* The LCD screen will have a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology so you can see the screen more clearly when playing outdoors. As you all know, the PSP?s screen is a key strength of the hardware, and this update adds an absolutely dazzling LCD screen to the handheld.
* A built-in microphone allows for Skype calls and multi-player gaming communication directly from the hardware - eliminating the need for attaching a separate headset.

Similar to our firmware updates, the new PSP is simply an opportunity to evolve the platform with the newest technology without adding to the cost of the system. The PSP Entertainment Packs will continue to be $199.99 (MSRP), and later this year we?ll release a standalone, updated PSP in a PSP Core Pack, which remains at $169.99 (MSRP).

meh I think I'll stick with the 2000. My screen is fine and I'd never want to use skype. I was hoping for a whole new handheld.

Is it worth the upgrade?

This wiki link explains it better than I can.

If a slightly smaller size, more memory, better WLAN, video out capabilities, and a brighter screen are important to you...then it may be worth the upgrade.

I'd probably wait for the PSP-3000 though if I had a PSP-1000 though. Just so I could have the latest improvements.

FUCK MAN I JUST BOUGHT TWO PSP2000'S TO PLAY WITH MY FRIENDS.

the psp2000 seems like a better upgrade than the 3000

the 2000 is slimmer, lighter, better screen and more ram and it takes a new smaller battery which lasts the same amount of time because the 2000 is more energy efficient.

the 3000 has that mic. which is sweet as fuck because I can skype voice chat instantly.
Although I have a cell phone and shit so I could live without it.

can't wait for a new psp in 2010 or whenever. One with something like 1.3ghz, 512mb ram, 7" LCD and a mini blueray disc. capable of stripped down 360 graphics. Then I won't want to own a home console, sit home and play games ever again.

I don't have any glare with the 2000 but I don't use it in bright sunlight.

any word on price drops? Unlikely unless the DS goes down in price. $99 would sell another 3 billion DS'

It's in the 3rd link in my OP.

$199.99 for the bundle and $169.99 for the PSP by itself. So, no price drop.

They just updated the pic to show the new PS button (what it does I have no idea)

oh sweet, it will come with a 4gb duo that's $40 alone and a $20 game (or is it $40?)

I just got a 2gb card, I'm gonna try out the internet radio and maybe stick some vids on it for kicks.

Oct for Europe? When exactly will they come out in the US? Will the bundles ship at the same time as the standalone psp? I guess they're not in a hurry to sell precious new PSP's in our country first.

I still have my PSP Fat (because I'm American and it suits me 😛) and frankly, I prefer how much easier it is to hack (as mine's already hacked).

This is fairly significant, IMO. The new screen has better color output, higher contrast ratio, and better anti-glare technology. And though not quoted here, the new screen also has a response time that is twice as fast (i.e. much less ghosting). Honestly, I'd be pissed I had bit on the 2000. Thankfully I didn't 🙂

certain levels are unplayable in manhunt2 psp because of ghosting.

So what exactly are the improvements made to the PSP-3000's newly upgraded LCD screen? According to a report by Engadget Japan, the screen is more colorful, has a stronger contrast ratio, and to the praise of gamers everywhere, has a faster response time. The official stats? Color gamut is twice as wide. The contrast ratio is improved 5 times. The response time has doubled. For gamers that have complained about the PSP-1000 and 2000's slow response time (which creates a ghosting effect in certain games), this is certainly good news.

I know, I love my fat PSP. My cousin has the PSP-2000, and frankly, I'm not a fan. It feels too flimsy and light. Sure, it might have more efficient energy use, but I do honestly prefer my fatty. Plus, oh how I love how I have mine hacked. 🙂

I am interested in the better screen of the PSP-3000, but it won't warrant an upgrade as I don't use my PSP that much, and again, the lightness of it would turn me away from it.

Here's to hoping a PSP2 is announced next year, because dammit, it's about time.

there is no way the psp2 is coming out for at least 3 more years, especially with all the psp upgrades. They're going to milk it more than the ps2.

so color gamut is twice as wide, contrast ratio improved 5x, what does this all mean visually? I doubt I'll notice much difference when playing the games except for the faster refreshing screen.

I think the 2000's lcd is perfect, as nice as my notebook if not better, I didn't think they had room to improve it.

how long is a PSP lcd designed to last with heavy usage? Any big issues known with the PSP? The psp1000 displays at gamestop and bestbuy are on 24/7 practically and last years. You guys think those are heavy duty models or the same thing you and I would have?

Honestly, I doubt many people would notice the color changes. The contrast ratio may be noticeable for some, but I doubt most people would actually notice unless they saw the new system side-by-side with an older model. I think the response time is the big one. I think that will be immediately noticeable to anyone that has played a game where the ghosting is a problem (typically the darker games).

I don't have any ghosting problems with games like GOW only screen tearing, the gritty games with lots of textures are the ones with heavy ghosting not games like patapon or other colorful games. Ghosting is a nice effect on Certain games. Gives it a nice anti aliasing/motion blur.

I didn't think the contrast ratio could be improved 5x, I'd REALLY like to see some side by side comparisons. The contrast on the psp is 5000:1?

what's the difference between static and dynamic contrast ratios?

And why do plasmas have superior contrast to LCD's given the same ratios?

is it possible to make a plasma screen for a psp in the future?

WIKI:

Contrast ratio ratings provided by different manufacturers of display devices are not necessarily comparable to each other due to differences in method of measurement, operation, and unstated variables.[1] Manufacturers have traditionally favored measurement methods that isolate the device from the system, whereas other designers have more often taken the effect of the room into account. An ideal room would absorb all the light reflecting from a projection screen or emitted by a CRT, and the only light seen in the room would come from the display device. With such a room, the contrast ratio of the image would be the same as the device. Real rooms reflect some of the light back to the displayed image, lowering the contrast ratio seen in the image.

maybe this 5x is due to the removal of glare from the screen...?

A notable recent development in the LCD technology is the so called "dynamic contrast" (DC). When there is a need to display a dark image, the display would underpower the backlight lamp (or decrease the aperture of the projector's lens using an iris), but will proportionately amplify the transmission through the LCD panel. This gives the benefit of realizing the potential static contrast ratio of the LCD panel in dark scenes, when the image is watched in a dark room. The drawback is that if a dark scene does contain small areas of superbright light, image quality may be over exposed.

wouldn't it be underexposed if the display is underpowered? Or does it only underpower the dark images and leaves the bright colors alone hence overexposing the bright colors?

yeah but that picture is BS. The glare messes up the contrast.

if they mean 5x better contrast ratio because of the glare protection, that's a different story.

Need to see pics in the dark.
