You would think that a forum full of geeks would embrace teaching a young kid about this stuff, I guess not. I was playing with Legos Technics when I was 5-6, building cars, learning about gearing etc, it was GREAT fun for me at that age and I learned so much from it. If you think your son is ready for a fun toy like this, give it a shot. Obviously you haven't let anyone deter you, so that's good.

I would say give it a shot...it will be fun and a good way for you two to spend time together. Either that or maybe some regular legos for a few years and spend time with him building with those. But be sure and read to him every night!!

My parents read to me almost daily as early as I can remember and I was always very far ahead of most of the other kids in reading/comprehension/grammar. It helped a ton. Also, if you would like him to learn a foreign language, start now - it will soak in a LOT better. The way this world is getting it wouldn't be bad for him to learn another language like spanish, french, german...something.

actually, nevermind, i can believe it. their parents probably did what they are telling you to do...not to give him something intellectually challenging.

he's too young for the full lego robot kit, but you'll have lots of fun playing with it, so buy it anyway.

I've had one for years, its wonderful, just get extra motors and mechanical parts and you can do anything. He'll have fun playing with whatever you build with it, eventually he'll start building himself, and that kind of experience will give him a big leg up.

Most of what I learned about gearing and stress and electric motors I learned playing with legos when I was 8. At 20, I'm a mechanical engineering studen specializing in robotics.

I agree with the general consensus...get him a load of regular legos now, and they'll be good when he's ready for real robotics when he's 11 or so. Trust me, regular legos are extremely stimulating for the mind, and will help lead him down the path to technical. I think the issue isn't that it's not good for him, but that I can't imagine any four y.o. being ready just yet, even with dad's help.
