Legit guitar shredding, technical playing?

The music generation gap threads got me thinking about this, I know lots of guitar playing that blew my mind, but I don't really "understand" music, and it might actually be simple playing that is overproduced. Hoping some of the real music players, and of course the normal fare of ATOT expert in things they have never done, to chime in on this. What are some guitar solos you were impressed by and would have a hard time learning to play?

Off the top of my head with amazing guitar work:

Frank Zappa

Fiery Furnaces

Tom Waits

There are obviously tons of other examples, including Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits, but I was born in '82 so my repertoire is only so big, and like I said I am not a musical person. I also really enjoyed Albini's stuff, but I think he was more a magician with the bass guitar.

Now that there are bass drops and other things it seems like the guitar has fallen by the wayside, not that I am complaining, I actually like lots of new music, and have always been a fan of percussion instruments especially when recreated by extreme speakers.

I only sleep at Holiday Inns, but I do own over 1,000 CDs without a single Bieber.

Richard Thompson doesn't often shred in the Van Halen / metal sense, but he's a great player

"1952 Vincent Black Lightning" - live

Some without good youtube clips: "Reckless Kind", "Mingus Eyes", "Dimming of the Day", "I Have No Right To Have It All"

Edit: > Tom Waits
That's actually Marc Ribot on guitar not Waits. He's played on Waits albums since Rain Dogs. One of my favorites is "Clap Hands":

I guess I got confused and sorry I placed a post when it was clear that ATOT assholes could have rendered the whole thing obsolete. Guess I am a piece of shit and I need to think of some more yo mama jokes and be sure to include bro at every chance, otherwise I have failed at every turn, sorry.

Not to rehash my stance, but again I am trying to repeat that I am not a musical person, and guessing you are not too. Sorry my posts do not meet the criteria of shredding, as I said I am not a musical person.

overreact much?

overreact much?

Yeah, I read the forums a lot, so overreaction is my default mode. I hear it is the douche reaction, but quite popular.

Assuming I am overreacting and this was a play to satisfy, who knows with you kooks any more, that variable, might be filled.

Check out michael angelo batio. dude can play 2 guitars at once... and playing them "upside down", as in like how you'd play a piano. His regular "shredding" on a single guitar is also insane.

Good guitarists make you feel something when they play. If you hear something and thing "Wow, that feels dark/sad/happy/funny/powerful", then that's a good guitarist. If you hear someone playing and think "Wow, that guy can play fast!", that's a technical guitarist.

BB King can make you cry with one note. He's a good guitarist.
Joe Satriani can play 142 notes a second on the Neapolitan Minor Phrygian scale. He's a technical guitarist.

Don't mind Fritzo. He just hates anything fast.

My favorite guitarists cause me to elicit both reactions.

😀 I don't love or hate fast playing, I just prefer more soulful playing. I can say this though: Technical playing can be learned. Playing with feeling is something you have to be born with.

So what happens when Satriani's playing makes you feel dark/sad/happy/funny/powerful? Would your head explode? 🙂

Personally, I am still a big fan of the 80's hair metal shredders (George Lynch and Warren DiMartini stood out over the rest of them IMO)
