Legislation introduced by Senate Democrats today targets civilian sniper rifles.
The bill, introduced by Senate Democrats looks to reduce the senseless violence and havoc wreaked by these devastating military style sniper rifles. Often sold under the guise of "hunting rifles" and "sporting rifles" these high powered assault weapons are capable of hitting a target with lethal force from more than a mile away.
"There is no place in our society for such weapons, they are meant for war-zones, not the streets where our children play" said one top Democratic sponsor.
The bill lays out specific features of these weapons to ensure that the second amendment rights of our nations hunters are not infringed. The most significant of these are as follows:
-No rifle with a calibre of more than .224" will be permitted to be used with a telescopic sight or optical scope
Rifles with calibre of less than .224" will be limited to optical scopes with power of four times magnification(4x) or less
-No rifle will be hold a capacity of more than 2 rounds and all rifles must have a fixed magazine
-Rifle barrel length must not exceed 18"
-Thumbhole stocks cannot be used in combination with bipods
-Camo patterns and colors not permitted
There will be no grandfathering clause for rifles that violate the new law; however a six-month period is slated to allow civilians to modify their weapons to comply with the law or turn their sniper rifles in to law enforcement. FBI statistics show gun violence from civilian sniper rifles is on the rise, with more than 200 deaths in 2010 and 2011 attributed to rifles.
The bill is expected to be heard on the Senate floor next week. Senate Republicans say they will support this effort in a bipartisian effort to curb street violence.
