Legislation introduced by Senate Democrats today targets civilian sniper rifles.

The bill, introduced by Senate Democrats looks to reduce the senseless violence and havoc wreaked by these devastating military style sniper rifles. Often sold under the guise of "hunting rifles" and "sporting rifles" these high powered assault weapons are capable of hitting a target with lethal force from more than a mile away.
"There is no place in our society for such weapons, they are meant for war-zones, not the streets where our children play" said one top Democratic sponsor.
The bill lays out specific features of these weapons to ensure that the second amendment rights of our nations hunters are not infringed. The most significant of these are as follows:

-No rifle with a calibre of more than .224" will be permitted to be used with a telescopic sight or optical scope
Rifles with calibre of less than .224" will be limited to optical scopes with power of four times magnification(4x) or less
-No rifle will be hold a capacity of more than 2 rounds and all rifles must have a fixed magazine
-Rifle barrel length must not exceed 18"
-Thumbhole stocks cannot be used in combination with bipods
-Camo patterns and colors not permitted

There will be no grandfathering clause for rifles that violate the new law; however a six-month period is slated to allow civilians to modify their weapons to comply with the law or turn their sniper rifles in to law enforcement. FBI statistics show gun violence from civilian sniper rifles is on the rise, with more than 200 deaths in 2010 and 2011 attributed to rifles.

The bill is expected to be heard on the Senate floor next week. Senate Republicans say they will support this effort in a bipartisian effort to curb street violence.

You do realize a lot of states prohibit using anything less then a 243 winchester / 6mm to hunt deer?

There is no way this bill is even going to hit the floor for debate. Hunting deer sized game with a 223 is not humane.

The 30-30, 270, 308 and 30-06 are used by millions of hunters. Personally, I use a 308 and 280 remington.

Wow, looks like the Mosin Nagant would be banned now.

All of the hunters who believed the Democrats when they said they were only coming for assault rifles should have known better.

One downside is that the supply of ammo is going to dry up fast. I don't know about anyone else but as soon as this is confirmed I am placing an order for a shit ton of surplus 7.62x54r

Hrmmm if only they made a bill making useless bills during economic depressions illegal....

Someone should make a bill for that! (Quick! To the liberal-o-mobile!)

Also, 4/10 OP - that was pretty funny.

Soo, my Ruger 10-22 with thumbhole stock, 20-inch Bull Barrel, 12x zoom, and bipod would most certainly be illegal. I hit squirrels out past 400 yards with this thing. Well, better ban subsonic ammo too as the good stuff is both accurate, and quiet without a suppressor, that and the bullet itself often gets smashed past any hope of forensics (unjacketed lead for ya). :sneaky:

Hell, NY did that with a great many things, but it's unlikely that this is a real piece of federal legislation. Here in NY we're seizing weapons based on HIPPA. Ridiculous.

It does strike me as incredibly stupid, these are weapons useful for hunting.

Now, i would never desecrate my hunting rifles with camo paint nor do i need a bipod on it but caliber and barrel length wise this is stupid.

You can't hunt anything but rabbit and fowl with these small calibers (and yeah, i know you CAN but not in a way i consider proper) and you need both a proper scope and a good barrel length to make clean shots.

Just another example of where legislation is made without asking the users first.

Sounds like an exaggeration - this can't possibly be real.

Edit: this would make muzzleloaders illegal.

I agree, this is ridiculous. I have a hunting rifle that wouldn't be legal under these guidelines. It holds 3 rounds, caliber is .300 Win Mag and it has a 10x scope. It also has a muzzle brake so that probably makes it an assault rifle.

I dont think this is real. It comes off as a chain email.

But with the insanity coming out of the democrat party on the gun issue. It wouldnt surprise me if some nutburger tried to introduce something like this.

It's probably best we all get hysterical and outraged before we do any fact checking to see if the OP is correct.

So soon you all forget the horror and tragedy inflicted by these weapons of death.

For those saying it makes certain guns illegal. . . it looks like its only if they have scopes, so you could oh, say, be a REAL hunter and stalk your prey instead of camping out on a hillside and pretending to be a military sniper.

What we really want is to see that this legislation actually exists.

I forget the horror my hunting rifle causes to my shoulder if I haven't fired it in a while. A .300 Win Mag is a real shoulder pounder.
