People pay 3000-5000 dollars for a racing frame with 2500 dollar wheel sets. If they add a few grams for lights, they might as well buy ghetto 1500 dollar wheelsets. /s

Our group leader has a $14,000 bike. It's insane. You can lift it up with your pinky. Meanwhile, I was on my $50 steel-framed Fuji. It did the job :D

They should just skim the extra gulp of water instead.

Sold my road bike last year and bought a cross/gravel bike. Still mostly ride the thing on the road but it is nice to get out on more badly maintained very low traffic back roads. Getting pretty popular around here/everywhere. I mtn bike but there are weekends like this one where it has rained and I need to get out to maintain my fitness so that means road/gravel.

I mean rare in general. How often do you hear about people dying on bicycles?

Happens enough times per year that it makes the local news here. In 2012 722 cyclists were killed on the roads in the United States.

what kind did you get him? I need to invest in some.
Got a set from Dinotte Lighting, but that was 8 years ago. Bit spendy and there seem to be tons of good ones now compared to back then. Although that does say something about their quality. He rides a lot and is still on the original battery pack

Don't knock the steel...my next mtb build is most likely going to be a chromoly steel-framed hard tail. :)

I always hate to see these headlines...makes me cringe. I've never been a big road bike and things like this are part of the reason. At least on a mtb I'm at the mercy of my own mistakes or the critters.
