Prostitution should be legal. Currently, it is a victimless crime that attempts to enforce a moral standard. IMO, morality for its own sake should not be legislated.

the prostitute is the victim.

How so?

ElFenix assumes that no woman (or man, or transsexual) could ever actually want to work as a prostitute, but rather is forced to it by being a victim of some outside factor.

that's what the law assumes, at least.

ElFenix is right, we should really outlaw all work, nobody should be forced into doing something they don't want because of the outside factor of "needing money".

mere economic pressures are not the outside factor that the legislature is thinking of.

either that or its just the moral majority. or historical criminalization of prostitution due to the spread of disease.

I'll tell you the real reason why prostitution was originally made illegal. Black pimps which originated from the days of slavery. Where the slave owner was having intercourse with black slaves. The black man began telling the female slaves to get some money from the white man. This evolved into street level pimping after the slaves were freed. Black pimps were making loads of TAX FREE CASH hand over fist. Cash that was largely being collected from white "johns" . The man saw all these prominent pimps coming up in the world and decided that they should not be allowed to obtain these riches legally. Remember that for hundreds of years whorehouses were where prominent businessmen and politicians would congregate for food, drink and sex. Remember these were incredibly racist times. Even many white men who opposed slavery couldn't stomach the idea of a wealthy negro. This compounded by the fact that many black pimps were beginning to pimp out the white woman as well was entirely too much for any white politician to ignore and just like that it became illegal.

It's legal everywhere in Nevada except Las Vegas (Clark County). Also, there's no grey area, it's simply illegal in those other professions. Though, yes, it certainly is alive and well.

Its always happened, still happens, and will continue to happen regardless of the law. We might as well bring it out into the open and have regulations and safeguards for those that CHOOSE to engage in it.

Look into the legal nevada brothels, they are 1000 times safer than the unregulated street walking that happens in every large urban area.

when was the last time our government had a few extra hundred million to billion depending on who you talk to in taxes out there and didn't take advantage of it?

If it isn't against the law it's going to get taxed like whoa. Which is fine with me, I am not going to be paying for sex so I won't be paying the tax. Win-win for me, hookers get money, system gets cleaned up, idiots who pay for sex lose money, and I benefit from whatever that tax money gets used for.

How are you going to benefit from a bunch of rich politicians going to strip clubs and driving newer cars more frequently?

who knows, maybe one will hit me and I will recognize the newer car as a rich person and sue them for a lot of money.

If prostitution were legal, there would be no coercion.

I think it's a thing that would have to be regulated and all. Plus, it's...uhmm...women selling themselves. By legalizing that business you might as well legalize sex slaves in America, too. Afterall, it's their choice, right?

You know, it is pretty ridiculous that while abortion is legal, prostitution is not. Isn't the whole pro choice argument that women should have total control over their bodies? Fucking a.
