It's like they say, those who cannot do, teach. Have you ever wondered why they can't do anything? Maybe we've stumbled onto something?

Only retards ever say that. Seriously, most major scientific discoveries come out of academia, but I guess that's not important in your fantasy world.

If pot is made legal, it should be subject to the laws that apply to both cigarettes AND alcohol.
Come on, you think smoking any substance is good for your lungs?

In addition, growing weed should not be legal without a license. They really need to follow the alcohol model on this one, or the streets will be flooded with cheap homegrown stuff, gangs will still profit from the sales, and the government won't get much in taxes.

I'm pretty sure it will be. It's covered under DUI laws already, and it's even got a 21 age cap.

But why shouldn't growing be legal? It's legal to brew your own beer, and you can even make your own hard liquor so long as you don't sell it to others.

The fact of the matter is that people would rather purchase weed at a grocery store than from some shady drug dealer just to save a few bucks or "stick it to the man." I can grow my own fruits and vegetables, but I still buy them at the store. I can brew my own beer, but I purchase that as well. And so do most people.

Even if the government weren't taking in much, nothing is less than something. Frankly, I think the $1 billion estimate is a lowball figure, but what if they only take in $2 million? Who cares, free tax revenue!

OP, please add this article.

Has more facts. Write and call to support Assembly Bill 390.

Smoke weed ? help the state?

Marijuana would be sold and taxed openly in California to adults 21 and older if legislation proposed Monday is signed into law. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, said his bill could generate big bucks for a cash-starved state while freeing law enforcement agencies to focus on worse crimes.

"I think there's a mentality throughout the state and the country that this isn't the highest priority ? and that maybe we should start to reassess," he said. Critics counter that it makes no sense for a Legislature so concerned about health that it has restricted use of trans fats in restaurants to legalize the smoking of a potentially harmful drug. "I think substance abuse is just ruining our society," said Assemblyman Paul Cook, R-Yucca Valley.

"I can't support that." "I think it's a slippery slope," Assemblyman Tom Berryhill, R-Modesto, said of easing pot laws. "We'll do everything we can to defeat it." Medical use of marijuana already is legal in California, but the new legislation would go a step further by allowing recreational use. Assembly Bill 390 would charge cannabis wholesalers $5,000 initially and $2,500 annually for the right to distribute weed. Retail outlets would pay fees of $50 per ounce of cannabis to generate revenue for drug education programs statewide.

The bill would prohibit cannabis near schools. It also would ban smoking it in public places or growing it in public view.

Before California could sell marijuana openly, however, it would have to persuade the federal government to alter its prohibition on pot.

i have lawyer friends iver smoked with..more teachers than you would even believe...tenured college professors, engineers, mechanics... you may find it disgusting but you are in an ever increasing minority.

In your world, that may be true. However, the number of people who don't smoke it FAR outnumber those who do. You live within a certain circle and that circle includes drug users so you are far more likely to run into more drug users than not. You may see yourself as being the center of the world, but really you are the minority.

It is also widely known that acedemia is filled with pot smokers. So being a tenured professor really doesn't mean jack. It's like they say, those who cannot do, teach. Have you ever wondered why they can't do anything? Maybe we've stumbled onto something?

There were a lot of people in HS who smoked it. If I had to estimate, I would say that at least 80% of them have no life right now. About 40% of them went on to harder drugs. Just talk with a rehab counsellor or social worker and you'll find out the truth.

So are you saying that it's typical for teacher's to smoke because they are losers who aren't in the field "doing" and are instead teaching? You're a tool. Alot of my friends in HS smoked, and yea, some are dead beats. I think they would have been deadbeats either way though. Some of my friends who smoke(d) are very successful. Your assumption about everything is basically wrong.

I like the idea of this... But I have some pretty crispy friends. Don't know if it would be a good thing for all of the US to be that way.

I think it's brilliant. Three birds one stone really, you get revenues from legalizing MJ and that's HUGE; you get revenues from substantial increase sales taxes from food vendors (snacks at the very least); everybody will be mellowed out and less road rage, less accidents, less traffics because people will most likely stay home unless they're getting food. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN!!! Where do I sign?

this part made me laff

hope weed is never legalized!

dealer?

I find the stuff disgusting.

yeah, many dealers do as well, and i know a mortician who really hated his job( he got out of it_ the kid is stacked) but hey..the dealers have the most to lose with it becoming legal.

a smart dealer would turn it into a real business and succeed either way.

nice, now California Peace Officers' Association are discriminating against deaf & blind people?

furthermore, since when does weed hinder any of your 5 senses?

Alcohol can make you go blind.

So, how would this affect drug testing for jobs?

If it is legal then the drug tests for MJ would just go away, right?

No.

1- it would still be illegal under federal law and most businesses are regulated by the Interstate Commerce Clause, and thus subject to some sort of federal meddling

2- even legal substances can be tested for and prohibited. See: Scott's Miracle Grow and tobacco

because we should trust a whole bunch of stoner hippies with the running of our union.

I'm surprised Republicans don't active support this kind of thing. Isn't the government supposed to be as small as possible and do as little as possible? Although I guess Republicans of the last 20 years don't really support smaller government...

i know it makes you feel good and important when you attempt to ridicule what he was saying, but maybe you should attempt to fully understand what he was saying before you make a fool of yourself.

Works for me. As long as people who smoke weed aren't allowed to participate in any welfare programs (they can fund their own habits as far as I'm concerned), let 'em do what they want. The extra taxes would be welcome.

You would have to put the same restriction on tobacco and alcohol then.

too much to hope for. amiano tends to be a crackpot though.
but it would be amusing to see obama send in the thugs and have california turn on him😉
