This. If the market demands $20/hour for picking lettuce, that's what picking lettuce is worth and the price of lettuce should go up accordingly. Artificially inflating the supply of unskilled and desperate labor is no different, and no better, than government artificially setting wages, or capital colluding to set prices.

I know many people who used to be in the construction industry... now they are not. New homes are being built but they are strictly built by crews of illegal aliens. If our local sheriff raided these worksites, I know legal workers would be lining up to work again.

In less than a generation I've seen drywallers cut from nearly $20 per hour (not far behind electricians and sheet metal fitters) to about $10 per hour, most of whom do not speak any English and none of whom will be on the job site 60 seconds after an INS truck rolls up. The quality of drywall work has suffered accordingly. In many areas this is also affecting the more skilled trades as well, as a non-union company will hire one licensed journeyman electrician and two dozen illegal aliens.

These people didn't suddenly decide their jobs were beneath them, they were simply priced out of the market, to the point that a job at Lowes or WalMart was a better option for them.

He said 20 years ago he ran a crew of wallboard guys in Houston that worked on new homes. He had plenty of work. Then, a flood of cheap illegal alien labor poured in . They would underbid him by half sometimes. He had a mortgage, wife, kids, etc and he then had to compete with guys living 10 to an apartment. You should have heard the names he called them. I had to calm him down. If he had been white, he would have been called a racist.

LOL Exactly right. I have heard many contractors say they could not function without illegal aliens; they simply work harder for less. In reality of course, contractors did without illegal aliens until recent times. Buildings would still get built - true, some marginal construction would likely not be built, but the vast majority of construction would continue with slightly higher prices and slightly lower profit margins.

most of the retail employees I see in Calif.are non white. But I'll let you do the color coding since you first mentioned it.

CA is not the whole US Here in KC most Lowes and Home Depot employees are white as well. At least on the KS side of KC we dont have illegals hanging out in front of them like you do in CA (last time i was there).
