Legal Weed Thread.... updated 1/31/15

Update 1/31/15:

Attorney General nominee opposes legalization:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/28/loretta-lynch-marijuana_n_6565962.html
Loretta Lynch, the nominee for attorney general, said Wednesday during her confirmation hearing that she does not support the legalization of marijuana, and that she disagrees with President Barack Obama's remarks about the drug being no more dangerous than alcohol.

During her hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) asked, "Do you support the legalization of marijuana?"

"Senator, I do not," Lynch replied.
Growers struggle with glut of legal pot in Washington state

And despite all the regulations and controls /taxes on sales in Washington State, heres your "black" market, right on Seattle Craigslist, all at untaxed black market prices.....delivered right to your door: https://seattle.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=marijuana&sort=rel

I'll be glad when we people wake up to the nonsense that this is. 🙂

Put a stop to unreasonable government nonsense with all their taxes and convoluted rigmarole to get a license.

Can't have that. All new bureaucracy needs to be overly complex so there are large numbers of new jobs for the politically connected.

Legalizing pot has always been a terrible idea. All you need to enter the black market is dirt. Know where I can get any of that?

Legalizing pot should never have been about making money. The biggest benefit of legalizing pot is keeping people out of jail for something as silly as smoking weed.

Lol. That was always the purpose behind it. Governments were just looking for a quick tax buck.

In a few years, pot will become just like tobacco. It will be heavily regulated with only a few big companies controlling the vast majority of production. Probably with a thriving black market on the Native reserves.

The need to reduce the tax if you have a Washington ID. That way locals don't get into the black market, but you can still fleece pot tourists.

I guess OP needs to be reminded about what happened when alcohol was banned, it spawned the biggest black market ever known to mankind, rival gangs routinely had blazing-gun feuds in the cities, many made millions serving the vast amount of people who wanted to drink. I'm not saying alcohol does not have a downside, it does and it's addictive and can cause reckless and dangerous behavior but do you really want to pay $60K/year to incarcerate someone who is guiltily of smoking a plant?, that's hard cash that the taxpayer must shell out every time.

Doesn't it work in Colorado?

Similar things are happening in Colorado. Overall sales and tax revenues are far less than projected. A big factor is that the taxes on legal pot are outrageous. They're already being re-examined by the legislature.

At the same time, the new laws make it easier than ever to both grow illegally and to buy and sell on the street. Cops don't want to investigate every report of a grow in someone's house, because it's now legal for anyone to grow a limited number of plants. Possession of up to 2 oz by any resident of the state is legal, so busting someone for selling baggies now becomes almost impossible.

We've been smoking weed legally in CA here since 1996. Go to a doctor, pay $44, get 1 year card. You won't be getting us to "come to our senses", ever.

Also, this isn't about taxes. This is about an end to jackboot thuggery on the part of the DOJ to further a racial agenda, which is what all drug laws are. Nobody gives a shit that potheads in WA aren't getting rich. Too bad.

So essentially it's not legal marijuana that isn't working. It's that taxes have created an inefficient market that doesn't allow it to clear.

Generally, when you tax ANYTHING at too high of a rate it will create a black market. Having created a blackmarket doesn't mean that the underlying thing being sold doesn't work.

If that was the case, then the blackmarket for apartment renting due to rent controls would mean that apartments don't work. So are you saying we should then outlaw apartments?

Cigarettes have a black market due to taxes. Should we now outlaw cigarettes too?

A blackmarket will always exist for something as long as there is government intervention in that market. That's how it works.

This is simple supply/demand and you'll find the effects of tariffs, quotas, etc. mentioned in any basic economics class.

If anything, all the licensing and tax laws will just serve to allow the bigger guys to survive, while the small guys go belly up or go black market. Should growing and selling weed really require a license? Moreover, what about growing weed for personal use? Is that legal without any license or w/e? What is the tax rate on weed in WA versus CO? It's like so much other regulation bullshit, too many hoops to be profitable in the short term.

And yes, pot legalization is just another issue stemmed from Christian holier-than-though idiots much like prohibition was. "SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" Alcohol is legal, and the consumption of it probably leads to many times more deaths than those caused by the 'ol Mary-J.

Sorry bud, but everyone knows how bad things are in most everything in California. I blame potheads.

So are you saying you are going to not only repeal individual state laws for recreational use in WA and CO in order to abuse more minorities, you are also going to go after AIDs and Cancer patient's medication?

Wow, stand up guy you are
