My other car was accused of a hit and run

Im going to give you guys cliff and a small story:

Car insurance expired: 5-8-12
Car has been sitting in my garage off public streets since 5-7-12
Police report states my car was involved in a hit and run on 5-5-12

story

If im seeing this correctly. My car was accused of a hit and run when my insurance was paid and active. I received a letter 5-19-2012 saying it was involved in an accident on 5-5-12 and they want me to contact them.

I have nothing to hide but im wondering do i contact the police now about this or wait till i re-instate my insurance. I know insurance will not honor anything after the lapsed date but in case this happened before it lapsed and im just finding out today. Im paying the insurance re-newel fee on this coming Friday.

So im in a huge legal pickle right now.

There is no damage to my car nor do i remember any accident. In fact i was just in court for a hit and run to my mustang which someone hit and i caught him. The guy had no insurance. It would be DUMB for me to run knowing my car has insurance on it and what just happen to me.

D: Pretty sure im going to need a lawyer. This is a misdemeanor in IL.

If you got into an accident and didn't know it, there can't be much damage to the other car.

Why does this sound a hell of a lot different than, "I wasn't in an accident, I have no clue wtf they're talking about." You're worried about your insurance paying it?! You should be taking a stance of "there's no fucking way this is going on MY record - I was NOT in a hit and run." You seem to be acquiescing that your insurance company will pay - seems as though it's a subtle way saying, "well, ummm, mayyyyyybe I bumped into a car, but no significant damage was done."

The way im seeing it is. The car was driven on the 5th. The police wants my insurance information. Im just trying to make sure they will honor whatever even though my insurance is lapsed. My insurance will FIGHT to get this handled now. Instead of me on my own with a lawyer. Now the insurance lawyers will fight for me. Even if i didn't hit anything they will want my insurance information and what good would that information be if its not covered. I would be screwed. This thread is about asking about LAPSED insurance when the supposed hit and run happened before it lapsed.

Sorry if i confused anyone. The insurance company will want to look @ my car now for damage and will contact the other company. Without my insurance company how would i get this settled on my own without a lawyer?

Plus the car JUST HAPPENS to have been sitting in a garage since then, and his first impulse on getting the letter is to renew the insurance.

Looks fishy to me.

No, i want to renew the insurance so my insurance will deal with this crap. If i knew this crap happened on the 5th wouldn't you think i would kept the insurance on this car? And why would i run for a hit and run when i just got out of one myself. And why would someone run from a hit and run when they have insurance.

Its obvious people run when they dont insurance at all. What idiot would run when they have insurance.

I will never drink alcohol or do drugs because of my phobia. Hell if you search ATOT you can find my phobia thread.
