Legal to Jailbreak iPhone 4

Okay,
I'm new to the iPhone and was recently told that jailbreaking the iphone is legal...and this piqued my interest as i have a couple of questions that i hope can be answered here:

1. If Jailbreaking is allowed, whats the best method to do so? Someone recommended Jailbreakme?

My goal, if the jailbreaking is both legal and easy is the following:

To be able to use my iPhone as a portable storage device, and/or use it as a wireless hotspot...i apologize if im not allowed to be talking about this on these forums, and if so this post can be deleted.

That's it, just wanted to know:

What else can you do with Jailbreaked iPhone?

How to jailbreak as easy as possible, Jailbreakme was recommended but wanted to see what you guys thought 🙂

I would use Jailbreakme as its very quick and easy. Yes its legal.

I use TetherMe for tethering but there are others.

I also use the following:

Activator - Can customize the home button (I have mine set to double click to go to the next track while the screen is off)

Delete Word - Can delete entire words instead of letter by letter

Inspell - Custom dictionary

Shrink - shrink/make larger icons

GVISettings and SMS GV extension - integrates Google Voice with the phone.

SBSettings - quick access to settings

Fiveicondock - Five icons in your dock

Winterboard - I dont really use it, but everyone will say it..lets you do themes and what not.

There are many ways to use an iPhone as a portable storage device without jailbreaking. Dropbox for one. But there is no real way to use it as a USB storage device which is probably what you want to do.

Using it as a wireless hotspot, while legal to jailbreak, is probably against your ToS with your carrier.

iPhone is pretty handicapped without a jailbreak. MyWi and My3G alone are worth jailbreaking iPhone for.

Wow, thanks for all the responses, and yes i wanted to use it as a portable storage device, meaning if i wanted to put some type of file or pic on it from a computer, would i be able to do that via Dropbox?

Also, whats the best way to Jailbreak the phone? Please point me to the right direction 🙂 Is Jailbreakme still the best way to do it?

Yeah, basically it's a way to transfer files from PC to iDevice. Try it out.

Depends on the OS version that you have. Just go to jailbreakme.com and see if it will jailbreak it. If not you'd have to use sn0wbreeze or redsn0w to jailbreak, but it's pretty straightforward.

All you jailbreakers give apple a headache. You done went and threw a monkey wrench into their calculated obsolesce upgrade path. All you silly rabbits were supposed to pay apple big bucks to make such devices more capable when they had the built in capacity all along.

In terms of you jailbreakers breaking criminal law, its simply not the case. But I suppose Apple could sue you in Civil Court, for breaking the terms of their usage agreements they imposed on you under duress.

Higher courts already ruled that jailbreaking and rooting are legal. You can do things after that process that may be in violation of your ToS with the carrier, but it won't go to court.
