like I said, it depends on the circumstances, the jurisdiction, etc. If dart doesn't want to provide any additional details, there isn't a clear cut answer.

Yup...it really will depend on where you are talking about. I remember asking a freind who is a cop a number of years back and the answer was no, unless the department got so much flack that it was better to pay for PR purposes.


EDIT: The police are far, far more likely to pay for damages if they made some kind of major mistake...like busted down the wrong door. If they busted down the right door you are screwed, regardless of whether you are ever found guilty.

If it was in err then you sue the poop out of the city for muy more than the cost of the door. If 'tweren't then yer prolly on your own.

Either way, I'd take it as a wake-up call, as 'twere, to install a secure door not so easily violated. Most doors (and windows of course) merely suggest "keep out" rather than doing anything about it.

So, so true. A solid hardwood door is not going to break, but 99.999% of door frames are wood and a 13 year old kid can easily shatter it (and no, those metal strikers and guards don't do jack).

all of our doors have steal plates on backside of the jamb that have screwes from the deadbolt plate to the studd. the plate is about 6 in x 8 inches. yay for installing our own doors and stuff.

I know this from experience. The doors in the dorms at my college were sturdy as hell with metal frames, but the apartment I lived in had regular wood frames. All of your force is going into pushing a 3/4" latch against maybe an inch thick piece of wood. Try telling the police that you accidentally kicked in a door though!

If they busted down the wrong door, they might pay for it. On the other hand, they might tell you to pound sand and go call your insurance company.

If they busted down the wrong door, and they won't pay up a little "hush money" for repairs, maybe you should call your friendly local newspaper and TV stations. You'll probably still have to handle it yourself, but it might influence their future policies in this matter.

If you make a big enough stink, I'm not sure if they're REQUIRED to fix your door, but the usually will. It's like when a snowplow takes out your mailbox. Legally, you have no recourse, but it's generally not worth the bad PR to the city if you complain so they'll fix it.

And fwiw, even metal frames do not do much unless they are solidly anchored into the studs on all sides and the are at least 4x4's that are properly anchored. Unless there is something to spread the impact something will shatter, be it the door, the larch, the frame, or the studs.
