I have a screenplay that I'm writing write now and would love to work with an online collaborator - what are the legal problems here? I would like to post an ad on craiglist and then pick someone based on their writing samples.. Would having them sign (in person) a lengthy disclaimer and such be legally sound (the document would state that I am the sole owner of the concept and the pages written together).. I would gladly give them co-credit but my fear is that I could get into a nasty rights battle over this.

I remember studying joint works in copyrights. I think you should have him sign something that says there is no intent that each of your contributions be merged into an inseparable work. Make it clear in the contract that you have control over the work and he is only contributing. Also I think you should spell out what compensation he is getting for his work, so there is no confusion about that later.

Good ideas... I think that I'll definately call my bro-in-law about this (he's a labor lawyer but I think that he might be able to help).. I would hate for a bitter battle to break out in case I ever do sell the thing
