legal paperwork: children moving to another state and i approve

ok, so my ex lives in kansas and my kids live with her during the school year. they stay with me, in north carolina, during the summer.

ex wants to move to georgia. works for me, as its much closer. neither of us have much money right now so she called legal aid in kansas, and they quoted her $700+ to do the paperwork and filing and whatever else.

is this something i can find out about and we can do without attorneys? do we even *need* to do anything right now, or just wait til she moves to GA? i dont really know how most of this works, as this is the first time since we got divorced that she wanted to move (married to a military guy, so theyve got orders to go in may)

any help or guidance appreciated, thanks 🙂

If she's married to a guy in the military, there might be some military lawyers that can do the work for cheaper?

Why do you need to file papers to move anyway?

Make sure that the paperwork is done. That includes her filing the paperwork to stop the child support order at the current place, and re-open it at the new place.

My Ex started out in Michigan, then moved to Kansas, and then proceeded to move around in Kansas. I moved from Michigan to California.

She never once closed the old order before opening a new. So I had 5 places all out of state, coming after me for child support. And even if you prove it to them, the only person that is allowed to close the cases is the wife. So far they've collected 3X the child support I should have paid. They've decided to put the last 2 on hold. Since they can plainly see that I've more than paid the amount I should have.

But the Ex refuses to go back and close them, because she realizes she'll have to return the excess amount. And there is not a thing I can do.

So the lesson here is, do not let her leave until she's filed the paperwork, even if you have to cough up the 700.00 because in the end it'll save you way more.

see above.

i think ill call the district court in kansas and see if it would be possible for her to get together the paperwork and file it herself if we can get everything signed that needs to be. otherwise ill have to wait i guess and cough up the dough. legal aid told her it can take a couple of months :-/

anyone ever file this type of paperwork and handle it without attorneys before? is it even worth considering?
