Legal minors

Sometimes legal minors reveal their age on these message boards, such as 'I am 13'.

I don't think this is a good idea. I wonder if the forum moderators should discourage this.

Well, you can't ID someone by their age, however, if it leads to harrasment, which I don't think it has, it is a problem.

As opposed to an illegal minor?

Bob,

How are they to stop it? No internet savey person should reveal who they really are, where they live, etc. For the underaged group we have here most seem to be aware of this, for the one you see being too forward just send them a PM warning them.

MedicBob,I agree with you. The internet is a dangerous place for youths. As one of the older citizens of this community, I have always felt a sense of duty to let a youngster know, when they are devulging too much information. Also, now in looking back at some situations, I think we should also talk to some of these kids, who bring out too much personal information about what their parents are doing, etc. I doubt the parents would condone their kids putting their business out on the web. Mods here should look for this, and shut that down, as well.

The internet is the safest place for youths. They are usually hundreds of miles away from the person they're talking to. They are far more anonymous on the internet than they would be anywhere else. It usually takes a long string of bad decisions and almost complete absence of parental responsibility for anything seriously bad to happen to someone on the internet. It's safer than going to school, church, or the playground.

Wow. Do you really believe that? You need some education, my friend. How old are you?
Teens posess an uncanny ability to outsmart parents, in general. They speak in a lingo the parents don't understand, and they go places on the internet that most parents don't have a clue about. OTOH, there are pedos out there, who understand both sides of the psychy, and know how to manipulate young people. Youngsters are not safe from the masters. They have no way of being that educated.

...That reads like a bad 1990s PSA played in a Health class in high school.

I'm far more inclined to find BladeVenom correct. I'd wager the same lack of knowledge parents have of the Internet is what perpetuates an irrational fear for information online.

I don't think this should be the responsibility of the mods. They've got enough crap to deal with, especially in OT and P&N where everyone acts like 13 year olds.

If you're worried about them, send them a PM.

Kind of a protection in itself, makes it hard to single out the real kids from the adults making fools of themselves.
Could make for good comedy material though, pedo convinces a kid to meet him somewhere, only to find out in person that he really setup a meeting with a socially inept 47 year old 🙂

Wow! You say you're concerned about someone revealing their age on the internet, then you ask people how old they are old. Now that's creepy. I'm probably too old for your tastes.

Wow, nice and personal. I agree with compuwiz1 and disagree with you. Have you watched Dateline? From chat room to at your house in less then a few hours. It doesn't have to take long and if these "kids" reveal their age online to anyone who asks or even doesn't ask, how much more information are they putting out there?

Oh wow... Whether I agree with you or not, I have to say that was really funny! 😀
