Legal blurays

I can see why people pirate. Tonight I tried to watch a legal copy of wreck it ralph 3d bluray and powerdvd wouldn't work without an update, so okay 10 minutes later update installed. Now it says it requires me to set a region for my bluray drive but I can't, it's grayed out and it says I have 0 changes left even though it's a new drive I bought off newegg.

So I try the PS3 with 4.x firmware which should support 3d blurays, the damn disc says the PS3 can't play it. So wtf? We end up watching a 3d version in mkv sbs format.. sigh.

That's odd that the PS3 wouldn't play it. PS3 is supposed to have one of the best (if not THE best) blu-ray players. You have the latest official PS3 system update? (Though you shouldn't need the latest one) Maybe you got a dud blu-ray disc.

The power DVD software thing does sound annoying. Haven't used one in years since I play all my blu-rays on my PS3, but I do remember something about the # of times you could change your region.

Not gonna justify pirating, but that does summarize why I rip all of the kids movies to the computer. Turn on TV, turn on Apple TV browse..see pretty pictures of the movie you want...hit play. Movie plays. Yay!

MakeMKV, fully-fuctional 30-day trial, rip BD and watch the biggest .mkv file it creates in VLC (PowerDVD might work), that will be the movie. The smaller files will be any bonus features/additional content.

If you didn't jump through hoops, Buena Vista studios would go out of business, and their employees would be forced to move to a homeless camp by train yard. Do you really want that? You're probably a terrorist. Only a fuckin' jihadist would complain about a red-blooded, selfless American company, that provides jobs for so many of our neighbors, while asking for nothing but a few paltry cents in return.

Sad part is, some people actually DO think that way. lol

On a side note, those American companies probably outsource half their staff overseas too. 😀

Interesting. I'll have to give that a shot next time.

I rarely use my PC bluray player anymore. It seems like every couple of months Powerdvd needs an update to play the movie. It's such a stupid pain in the ass. So I can easily rip movies and play them on any computer but I have to dick around to play it straight from the disc?

i had no problem playing that movie in my ps3, along with many other 3d blu rays. and i have an old fat launch ps3.

sounds like user error all around.

Except that when I hit stop on my PS3 it takes me back to the PS3 menu. They could have just made the skip forward button work instead of purposefully disabling it (instead you have to fast forward through all the commercials).

This is just another example of how the terrorists and cyber criminals will attack our freedoms any way they can. We must protect the homeland at all cost, even if it means we have to give up a few liberties in the process.

I buy Blu-Ray movie, put in Blu-Ray player, play movie. No issues.
PowerDVD does suck I agree, I don't use a computer to play movies anymore unless its downloaded. Then I just use VLC.

Just don't say DVDs were any different, as many BD-haters have been prone to do.

I had to update my Sigma Designs RealMagic Hollywood+ decoder card's drivers and playback software to play the latest DVDs in the '90s. Sometimes, I had to roll it back to play one that worked fine before the update! I even remember being unable to watch Prince of Egypt at a friend's house because the Macrovision protection didn't like that my composite cable was running through a VCR before the TV (TV had no composite inputs).

In all, I still thought the advances were worth it.

I also had trouble with my 4x Creative DVD Blaster drive's region not being set. The first time was incredibly confusing because I had already set the region of the H+ and did not have any kind of software utility for setting it on the drive.

Came in to post this.

We have a really nice Sony Bluray player with a bunch of Internet apps...never ever use it. Instead, we just throw it on MakeMKV and play it back on our WDTV Live Streaming box. It's such a pain to get the Bluray working...a million unskippable menus, updates required, blah blah blah. I don't know how regular people watch Blurays, let alone geeks like us.

Netflix has the right idea imo. Nice big browseable pictures, click to play, done.

I haven't bought a Blu-ray disc in years because I sold my PS3 and don't have a drive in my computer. Honestly, I'd be happy buying all my shit off iTunes if my effing bandwidth limit wasn't so low (80 Gb per month cap, $1.50-ish/Gb on top or $15 for 40Gb more per month).

Mostly false.

Your experience sucks, but it isn't the reason most people pirate movies/music. Most do it simply because they don't want to pay and have no problem with stealing.

How is it mostly false? I put in a DVD for my son and it has several menus I can't skip. Yet I D/L a "pirate" copy and plays without menus/screens.
