Legal alternative to mp3 downloading -- use a Russian server?

Do you think that this is truly a legal way to get around the RIAA? I'm not so sure...open up the debate! :

It is a Russian run site that is legal, or so people have said...
Looks like with an account ($10 for 1GB of transfer), you can get an album for less than $1 in wma format at 192kb/sec.

Of course not. Sure, the Russians might be off the hook, but if you are in the US downloading the data to the US, then you are still under US jurisdiction. If the RIAA came after you and you went to court, I don't think they would let you off just because you paid some Russians to do the dirty work.

 

This is going to turn into a flamefest.

Legality only extends as far as you can throw your local legislator.

It may still be stealing but the RIAA cant hop on the site and see who is downloading what. So if you DL alot it may be safer than Kazza.

Thanks Earl Warren, I'm glad you weighed in.

It may very well not be legal in its current incarnation, but that's not for us to decide. In any case, I think it's a really interesting delivery platform(online encoding, etc.). Maybe we'll see a service in the U.S. with similar features eventually.
