How is USB or Firewire any less waisted if you never use it? Heck, my computer has 5 USB ports on it, 4 of which don't get used at all! So I guess that means USB isn't very modular, those 4 extra ports should up and dissapear god damn it! Actually, really all 5 could up and dissapear because the one USB device is a printer, and that could easily go on the parallel port with my scanner. Listen, Firewire and USB are fast, fun and conviniant... I'm all for developing newer, better interfaces... However there is no reason in the world to go and get rid of older ports. I beleive some one later in this thread makes the comment that the cost of a motherboard will go down with out these ports. This person obviosly hasn't delt with hardware much... The hardware associated with these ports are so cheap, practically fractions of a penny per device. You won't see a price drop on your fav. motherboard just because it didn't come with Serial or PS/2 devices.

Eh? Don't tell me you're serious?

They are all wasted ports if you don't use them.

If I don't use a PS/2 Kyeboard or mouse, what good are the PS/2 ports now?

Not to mention the benefits to having certain devices in USB or Firewire form.

The only think I can think of would be polling, that would not be better than IRQ's!

<< This whole zero Legacy thing is so bad we even had some one asking if Itanic supported "old legacy IRQ's"! Fortunetly that thread didn't last quite so long!

Well this is possible, I mean we have replacements for almost everything serial, paralell, etc ports do. But I'd like to hear what they'd like to replace IRQs with, that would be interesting.

I don't know about you...but my MB Is running 4USB 2.0 ports in a PCI slot cover bracket type that that connects to the MB, and 4USB 1.1 ports, two on the back plate, two front mounted in the case. :)

Yup, those USB ports aren't very modular at all. They horribly limit us to what we can use... I mean, being able to have 2 printers, 1 scanner, keyboard, mouse, CF reader, etc, in any port isn't that impressive right? I could just use my PS/2 ports, parallel and serial ports to hook them all up. Yeah right... would have piss-poor performance from my CF reader, printers and scanner. Not to mention I couldn't just unplug my reader and plug it in another computer.

Legacy ports: good for one or a few things hence my previous post. Having a USB keyboard and mouse means I have wasted PS/2 ports, they are good for nothing else. (except for the couple rare devices that use power from the PS/2 port)

Yeah, and the last time we 'just let it be' we had ISA slots on our motherboards two years after the spec was killed off!

<< very nice but i'm rather talking about something like this :
a selfmade IR receiver for serial port
>>

I like that people are DIY'ers, but in this case I think I'm going to go for the faster transfer rates :)

<< now before we get that on usb ... >>

Get on their ass! I send out about 5 emails a week to companies :)
