i cant wait for the 2nd one, i have little doubt it will be well worth it.

One year is not a long enough development cycle. Left 4 Dead 2 could easily be an expansion pack or series of updates to Left 4 Dead 1 and that is what is leaving a bad tste in many mouths.

I'm sure some will, but thats my point I made originally - unless Valve does something, I could see this game really dividing the current and potential L4D community...its just so soon.

This is exactly why I don't buy yearly multiplayer games. BF1942 was awesome when it was huge. Then it was divided into BF Vietnam a year later. Then it was divided into BF2 a year after that. Then it was BF2343242 a year after that. Call of Duty was the same.

Most multiplayer games suck pretty bad until they have third party support. Half-Life multiplayer was bland until we started seeing things like map voting, Counter-Strike, DOD, grapple hooks, hlstats, bots, custom maps, etc. You'd think valve would understand how this works since the wildly successful mod Counter-Strike has made them millions of dollars.

Valve has been screwing around lately. They released TF2 and L4D when they were only half finished (TF2 only had 4 or 5 maps) and now this. I'm hopeful that L4D2 will be a good game, but I won't buy it until it has established strong third party support. That usually doesn't happen until several months after the SDK for the game has been released. As an example of this, Natural Selection mod for Half-Life didn't come out until 2002, that's about 4 years after Half-Life was released.

Just wanted to point out the differences in thought between this thread and this Console gaming thread.
But try to remember what level of quality console gamers expect. They pay to play online, their hard drive space is as expensive as PC hard drive space was 10 years ago, their games are 40% more expensive, they pay for new maps, and they even pay for xbox themes. These people were impressed when their PS3 from 2006 was able to play avi files from 1999. You could shit in a bag and it would impress console gamers.

Console gamers (at least on 360) also have to pay for all the updates that we usually get for free. For them a whole new game is probably cheaper than paying for each new update.

I wasn't really looking forward to this game much until the last couple of days that I started to watch gameplay videos. It's going to be pretty sweet by the looks of it. I don't have a problem buying a second one so soon, maybe it's because I got the first one as a gift, or because $50 really isn't something to cry over. Valve makes a lot of my favorite games.

Having you pay $50 for an unfinished DLC pack for the first game sure.

This post is full of win

I don't give a crap about this L4D2 game, because I think they both look incredibly boring and unfinished, but isn't it true that Valve promised a lot of free content for L4D that they never delivered? Normally I don't agree with these people who have this sense of entitlement to free content, but it's different if they're promised the content, which then gets rolled into a whole new game. Of course, it's possible I'm wrong and Valve never promised free content - like I said, I don't really give a crap.

My pre-order unlocks the demo tonight @ 11PM! Woohoo!

I split up the 4 pack with 3 others so I only paid ~$33 for the game. Im sure I will get all of that and more out of it.

Love that they decided to unlock the demo for us east coasters at 2 FUCKING AM. Looks like I don't get in on it til tomorrow evening...work in the AM.

yeah, the were supposed to unlock it at 7pm EST (4pm PST) but obviously decided to push that time back... What sucks is that the 360 players have been able to play all day as I think they could play as early as 12am, been watching people play through streams on justin.tv

that being said, I think the 4 pack is really going to be taken advantage of here more so than for L4D1. It wasn't hard making a bunch of new steam friends through L4D1 and if you love the game you probably really love it and find enough people to get in on a 4 pack (something that might not have been as easy to convince others for L4D1).

10% off 25% off and the game only costs $33.75, helluva of deal IMO

Nope, delaying it yet again. At 6pm. For fuck's sake not even Blizzard pulls this shit.

So now that 6PM...and 7 PM have come and gone, and the demo still isn't out....

from the official Left 4 Dead 2 steam group chat (which is currently set to officers only due to all the spamming that would otherwise ensue)

"

mike (1): We're making progress and hope to have some news soon.
mike (1): We're still aiming at a release today.
mike (1): Obviously, "Today" means Pacific Daylight Time; GMT-7

"
so basically they're now claiming it'll be out anytime between now and midnight PST
