Left Job...never asked for computer and related items back

My wife's company writes off a lot of hardware after a period of time. Recently her hard drive failed on her desktop computer (it was around 4 years old). They shipped her a new computer and told her she could 'throw away' the old computer as it was written off.
 
Send an e-mail, CC all the heads at the company and give an ultimatum:

"Get your crap out of my basement or if I get no response I start pawning it off starting Wednesday, July 5, 2011."

This. If the hardware is >3 years old, it has already been depreciated to $0 on company assets. Basically it would cost them more in time/money to recover and/or dispose of those assets than it is worth.
 
at my company, they don't really care about the hardware itself, however the data on the HD they'd go nuts about.
 
Anyone else find it ridiculous this guy got a job like this when he obviously struggles with basic grammar and spelling? Welcome to America....lol
 
Phone calls and emails probably won't protect you if they demand their stuff back a year from now.

I'd send a certified letter listing the items and giving them a reasonable time to pay for their return, after which you will dispose of them.

Remember to charge for tape, packaging, etc. not just the shipping.

Where I work we get separated employees now and then that have older equipment, the company still wants it back, though. It's not about the equipment, even if it was very new, it's much more about data on the machines.

Yep, like BoomerD said too. It's a lot more to do than shoot off an email, but I'd feel that way if I didn't get any response that I could keep the stuff. Otherwise it's like, well I could probably keep this stuff to use but I could get hit 1 year down the road.

Unfortunately when they see the letter listing everything you have (maybe they don't realize how much $ worth of stuff you have) they might start to care! :\
 
UPDATE!

The company emailed me asking if I needed anything to send the equipment back. I told them a bunch of tape and labels for the 8-9 boxes. They replied back and asked for an inventory to see if they wanted it all back.

All they want back was one of the PC Laptops, Cisco Router and 2 office IP phones.

I get to keep: 1 sweet PC laptop, 1 older but nice PC laptop, 1 ok Mac laptop, HP 22" LCD, HP 19" LCD, HP Office Printer, External Drive, External DVD and other misc. stuff.

SWEET!!!

I am making multiple copies of that email just in case.
