Coke or Soda (Specifically Dr. Pepper as in - "Hey get me a Coke." "What kind." "A Dr. Pepper."):

I've seen hobos, pissing on themselves in the alley and ranting about the mind control rays in the sky, who made more sense than this.

So it makes perfect sense to you to order a coke, then when asked what kind you say Coke again?

Yep. If you say "Coke" a second time, you get a Coca-Cola. If you say Pepsi the second time, than you get that particular brand. Folks are smart enough down here (barely) to understand this method.

I actually grew up near Detroit. This is the epi-center of "pop" land. The idea of calling soda Coke, and then identifying the particular variety of soda that you want was a damn hard one for me to get. I happen to enjoy annoying the piss out of yankees now that I've transplanted to the south.

Coke is a soda of any type, soda is a soft drink, and a pop is a punch in the face.

Well I agree with you about pop but I think coke is a punch in the face as well, for more obvious reasons than pop. If I order a Coke I want a Coke, don't make me say it twice! :D

How the fuck can you guys have the same conversation about soda/coke/pop every other fucking day without getting utterly tired of talking about it? Losers.

I've told that to the south many times. I dont care what you call it, but COKE is a brand name.

Xerox, Kleenex, White Out, Escalator, Scotch tape.

If you use any of those names instead of photocopy, tissue, correction fluid, moving staircase, or adhesive tape then you have no case. Some brand names just become ubiquitous. It's called genericide or genericization.

Except the Coke one adds confusion. When you go to a restaurant you don't order a soda or a pop you just order a Dr. Pepper or whatever brand name you want. If I go to the south and order a Coke, I gotta then tell them again that I want a Coke? That's just dumb. I guess I can just be happy that when they come up here and ask for a Coke when they want a Dr. Pepper, they get a fucking Coke. :)

I picture the following:

Patron - I'd like a coke.
Waitress - What kind?
P - A Coke.
W - What kind?
P - A Coke.
W - What kind?
...

How the hell are you supposed to order a damn Coke?

easy. when they ask what kind you reply "regular" or say "diet" either way will get it.

Diet what?
Diet Coke
What kind of diet coke?
...

i know you are slow and this is very complicated.

when you ask for a coke they will ask what kind. regular is reguler coke/pepsi. diet will get you a diet coke/pepsi.

the pop/soda/coke really only is for coke/pepsi main products

and since nearly every place offers coke and not pepsi you get coke everywhere

Pepsi is not Coke! And Pepsi is not a substitute for Coke. They are far too different. Coke is much better. I hate it when I go to a place and order a Coke, and then they give me a Pepsi without even asking .... If I knew they didn't have coke, I would have ordered Dr Pepper, or Mountain Dew! That is, unless they have RC Cola. RC Cola IMO, is the best of colas!
