Left 4 Dead keeps crashing

Are you running the latest drivers for that 4870? I couldn't play at all till I updated mine.

I can concur with this. I had to update my drivers to stop the crashing. Basically it seems that with ATI hardware, if you aren't running Catalyst 8.10, you won't be able to play the game, for more than three minutes anyway.

Nvidia card here and the same thing kept happening to me. I been hearing a lot of reports of this on Nvidia and ATI video cards no matter what video card drivers you use. As well as Windows XP and Windows Vista. Both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

I believe people on the steam forum may have pinpointed the problem but not sure yet. Think I finally got my Left 4 Dead to run without crashing at all sense I played it tonight for around 6 hours straight without a crash.

Mine does the same thing on the house level. Crashes very consistantly.

However, sewers doesn't crash at all. Played that several times with no problem. Very wierd.

Yeah it was annoying. I would always get into a sound loop having to alt tab then close out the left 4 dead process. Doesn't happen here anymore though.

You all should try this cool console command though! z_health 10000

That makes it so zombies don't die unless you shoot them in the head! Really brings a whole new challenge to the game!

I just get a dll error when I Start the game but after that the game runs perfectly

looks alot like a beta we are playing

I got a sound loop as well, it continued even on the desktop so i had to restart, think this has happened twice. I didnt check the processes that were still running though, i assumed L4D was closed as the main program was closed.

Crashes for me too. Pretty often. Especially if I'm hosting a LAN game, it usually won't even make it past the 1st checkpoint. It also happens to my roommate as well.

I don't think it's ever actually crashed on me, and I've been running a dedicated server off of my gaming comp 24/7 since it was released. I've even been alt-tabbing a lot between the game and the server console (since rcon doesn't work and neither do passwords... can't even join my own fscking server) and haven't had any crashes in the client.

The fix to stop Left 4 Dead crashing is easy just disable sync with steamcloud.

Didn't fix it for me

Ok try this. Don't ask me why but it seems to work for some people. Instead of having Left 4 Dead running in full screen mode choose windowed (no border)

Turned off steam cloud and tried windowed mode. I crash after about 2 mins and sometimes it locks up my PC. Only online does it crash though...

Single player I was able to complete the demo without a problem twice..

I think they just have a problem with the servers and that should be fixed when the full game is released

I've been getting some crashes between the two levels.

Valve's done a great job of breaking the game over and over with their 'fixes'

Also, has anyone else noticed the massive number of Steam engine updates since the L4D demo was released? Steam no longer takes 60 seconds to start up

I get lots of sound looping crashes in the demo as well, I'm holding out on buying the game to see if things clear up and to hear more about the overall game. I found it funny that they offered you the demo if you preorder, that's like saying you can see whats behind door number one if you pay $75 first - why not let us look through the window? At least they released it eventually though.
