I completely agree with the sentiment... this should be a free DLC or a cheap expansion pack. It'll split the online community in 2 and the l4d 1 people will be screwed.

It'd be hilarious if someone made a mod for l4d 1 and just copy over all the l4d 2 content over for free when the SDK comes out :D

It does seem far too soon to release L4D2. I think they'd be hardpressed if they packaged it as DLC. Theyre turning into EA...slowly

I demand that all games should be free because then I can play more without spending money! I'm entitled to free things because I have the internet!

Surprisingly I have never played L4D. Been wanting to pick it up and try it but havent gotten around to it yet. When I saw the news about L4D2 coming in November I was thinking it was a rushed more of the same expansion. Its interesting to read what folks are saying about it on the net. Personally I'm neutral on the subject since it doesnt directly affect me. I can see why the fans might be upset assuming whats been said is all true. I'll wait till the release of L4D2 has happened though before deciding who is right or wrong. I might as well wait til November before trying L4D and see if Valve offers a package deal for the two games.

As for the resentment over the timing of the sequel, he's just hoping all of you give it a fair shake. "We want to wait and weed through the comments, I'm already getting e-mails, and I'm responding to them," he said. He talked about the reaction to the Orange Box, how people were angry about "buying" Half-Life 2 again. "And looking back, was the Orange Box a ripoff? Give us a fair shake on this, read more about it, find out about it, we've already let people play it here... After that, if you want to vent, post to the forums. We do read them, we read all the forums, we read [the Ars forums]. You can e-mail me at ChetF@valvesoftware.com, or I'm Chet on Steam. Hit me up, we can play some games and talk about it."

That's retarded, orange box gave us 2 whole new games (one of the being TF2, and they updated the hell out of that game and gave us supreme value on it)... when i bought orange box the 1st or 2nd week, it was only 34.99 at best buy. L4D2 is probably going to be equal (or more than that).

That's not the point, the point is, l4d2 doesn't look to be much more of an update and it comes out way too soon. It'll fragment the l4d online community and lowers the value of the original l4d game.

No, it's totally the point. Valve is the only software company where people seem to feel entitled to free stuff. Why? Because Valve is the only software company that has *ever* given away free stuff (not including patches). People expect everything they release to have the content level of the Orange Box and then get a discount too.

Blame the consoles if you want, where paying for any scrap of extra content is almost requisite. You think Valve is really going to convince Sony and MS that a doubling or more of content should be downloaded for free? They had to strike a special deal just to get the first expansion for L4D onto the XBox for free. And consolers are still shafted out of the TF2 extra content. Let's face it, if they're going to charge console players $49.95 for L4D:2, then it's not going to be free on the PC.

If you don't think it's worth the money, don't buy it. But don't give me the 'we're entitled to it as a community' stuff. Valve is entitled to make money to pay their programmers too.

We think we're entitled because Valve promised regular updates with new weapons, characters, and maps. If they continue to update it after (or a significant update before) the sequel is released I won't have a problem with it. Even if they don't, I'd probably get the new one anyway if there's any significant changes.

Well if valvE learns anything from this its not to give out content updates and sell packaged deals :) I bought l4d for $50 so not worth it. I so wanted to like it but its on rails I hate rails. They should do it like 1 big ass free form city then it would be fucking cool. Explore all different areas set up your base in different spots of the city ,etc. Anyways I wont buy l4d2 anyhow as I didn't really like the original enough to shell out more $.

The game sold 2.5 million RETAIL copies. Including purchases off Steam, that's a total number of sales that makes 18,500 pissy emo brats look as insignifcant as they really are.

This was NOT CS:S or TF2. Valve didn't just toss some characters into a tiny, simplistic map and let them invent some fun for themselves. Each of those maps was a work of art. They all felt so natural and open yet still they managed to usher you through the requisite progression without looking like they were doing so. That is not easy...especially on that scale and maintaining that level of detail and thematic consistency and making it all look forboding. If it were easy, you'd have made those maps and sold 2.5 million copies but you didn't. I'll bet you could pool all 18,500 of the people who joined that group and put them in a room for 10 years and they couldn't pull that off. And the maps were just the icing...the game had no network lag, it played well on crap graphics cards, the animations were all spot on, the music and sound was great....they pulled off what they were trying to do successfully.

I consider L4D a co-op game. It's not a solo-player game and it's not a team-based multiplayer game. As such, the replayability is good, but not endless. I played TF2 before L4D and I'm still playing TF2 after I quit playing L4D. But I did play through each map of L4D about 20 times and loved it more than TF2 or Bioshock or Crysis or anything else I've spent that much money on the past few years. For that matter, Bioshock 2 is coming out this year too. Are you going to complain about having to pay for a sequel to that game too?

I conclude with 2 point.

1. L4D is going to be bigger and better than L4D. That's not an expansion pack, homie.
2. As PC gamers what we really want are more high quality titles. L4D was one of the most polished ones we've gotten ahold of for a while. If you want more of those then put your money where your mouth is.

With any luck, they'll have a promo period where current L4D owners can snipe it for $20. Which I think is reasonable, given that it will double the L4D universe.

I think they should release it as a L4D expansion pack, so they don't fragment the community and require that you switch games when you get a friend invite. Yet another reason I loathe not having the right to resell my purchases I've made that require Steam. Once L4D2 comes out, my copy of L4D (which I thought would have years of multiplayer goodness for my $25) will be a grayed out memory of a game I once had installed, but could never recoup any funds from. In short, L4D will be completely worthless because multiplayer is where it's at, and L4D2 will be where it went.

How much were you planning to recoup on something you'd consider worthless?

There is one sure-fire way Valve can not only appease 21k angry Steam users but also rake in unbelievable moolah.

For one week allow current owners of Left 4 Dead 1 to pre-order Left 4 Dead 2 for say $25. I believe this to be the perfect solution. Valve will see sales likely far greater than their weekend deals which typically net 2000% increases in sales and will restore any lost credibility with their fanbase.

I don't agree with the boycott, and I think it's going to hurt PC gaming more than help it.

In the end, if PC gamers boycott L4D2 in large numbers while XBox 360 gamers buy L4D2 in droves, it will only increase the gap between PC and console gaming in sales, and continue moving Valve to a more console-centric strategy.

This has the potential to be bad for all PC gamers unfortunately.

For those of you using the "WAA I SHOULD GET FREE STUFF" argument, the reason people are complaining is that VALVe promised to regularly update L4D for free, and have now gone back on that promise. They argue that they bought the game under the pretenses that it would be updated, and as it is, they arent getting the value they payed for.

I, personally, havent played L4D, so I dont know how valid the argument is.

Put simply, Left 4 Dead 2 is everything Left 4 Dead 1 should have been.

This backlash is totally retarded. You can still play L4D when L4D2 comes out, and Valve claims they haven't abandoned updating the older game. If the new game is good, buy it and play it. End of story.

Think people are going to keep those dedicated servers running for the old game? You won't be able to play Left 4 Dead 1 like you used to.

Wow, just like Counter-Strike 1.6 when Source came out? Oh wait.

Set up a server yourself if your favorites get shut down. You have no inherent rights to community-run servers or free content.

Wow just like Counter-Strike Source came out 4 years after 1.6 having time to build up a large user created community? Wait, Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out less than a year after the first. Cash grab.

I have the right to vote with my wallet and I certainly will.

I will purchase L4D2, I do not care if it comes out 'too early' It's never too early for another good game.

Cmon, chainsaw time! I already have a L4D server, if it stays populated, I will leave it up forever, until it gets unpopular...I will also host a L4D 2 Server :).
