<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>From Fritzo: Also---how do you "steal" a traditional song? </end quote></div>

Well if Jimmy Paige can (fraudulently) stake out intellectual property rights to old traditional Scandanavian, British and American folk songs as "author," then subsequent musicians have to pay him royalties for using "his" property. When played on radio, performed in public plays, in movies, etc., royalties are paid to the "author." But he's not the author, he's a thief with clout because he's rich.

Jimmy Paige travelled through the American South looking for material. Not "writing" new material, but rather looking for preexisting material he could get away with taking. In a video by bluesman John Hammond, one of the old black blues musicians in Mississippi noted that Jimmy Paige from England had just been through the previous week.

Edit: That video is: "The search for Robert Johnson" [videorecording (DVD)] / Sony Music Entertainment ; producer, Jerry Rappoport and DeAngela Napier ; directed and produced by Chris Hunt, Narrator, John Hammond, ISBN 0738900796 at your local library. Text

and also look over the fact that MANY artists have done the same things.

Much of becoming a 'star' is the look and feel not the talent.

Led Zeppelin has paid and also credited quite a few artists though. Most here don't know enough of the issue to successfully debate it.

Led Zeppelin is still my main group. Even though I came after them really (born in 1971), I had their whole collection on tape by my teens, both the books about them, etc.

These arguments go hand in hand with the music industry.

Personally I want to be moved/entertained. I could give two shits about how the song came into one's possession esp. in a day and age of few true songwriters that perform their own work.

Given the status this tour would have and what it would take to get these guys out on the road, it's not unreasonable to assume the guarantee would be in the $3-million-per-night range. The merchandise numbers would be astronomical, $15 per head or better, so that brings in another $15.4 million minimum, with online sales bringing in plenty more.

I wonder what ticket prices will be?

A lot of people don't understand that. There is much in music that cannot be copyrighted and anyone can use freely. You copyright a song, you don't copyright the individual componants of the song - the drum beat, one line of notes. blah blah blah. One can get the truth out of what the poster Scott said by the fact that Paige and plant still own the copyrights to all those songs he mentions. They wouldn't if any of what he said were true.

I haven't read much LZ news recently...what's the difference between this new "Mothership" release and Early Days and Latter Days?

I love some Zep, but Plant absolutely has NO voice anymore. If they tour, it'll be huge, but lots of people will leave wondering who was singing. He still sounds like Robert Plant in his low voice, but no high note exists for him now, and hasn't since the 80's.

Listen to Stairway To Heaven at the 1988 Atlantic Records concert to see.

WHOA, you guys take everything you heard on the Howard Stern Show as gospel. Keep in mind every artist is influence by those who precede them.

Not everyone steals lyrics and songs from other artists and doesn't credit them.

<--Loves Led Zeppelin regardless.

I saw them twice in '75 and '77. I paid 17 dollars for a Twenty third row center stage seat in '75 . It was 2 1/2 hours of the best rock n roll ever ....

Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti is all original music and the hardest and best that LZ ever did .

Plus the Yardbirds had the highest concentration of guitar talent of any band ever.....

Actually there are many that pay songwriters to do it for them and then own the 'rights' so they can proclaim the songs as there's.

It's been going on a long time and will be. In music it's the singer not the song and the show not the talent.

November 26th, in London, Led Zeppelin will be giving a benefit concert for the first time in 12 years. The benefit concert will be given in the name of Ahmet Ertegun who was the original founder of Atlantic Records. November coincides with the month they release their "Mothership" album.

I have wanted to go to the UK for a very long time. It would be great to go and see it. But, it has to be one more thing I haven't seen there. It was a complete surprise. By the time it would take me to get a passport, the concert will be over.

Unprepared - Out of Luck

LMAO, im sure most people havent heard that yet.</end quote></div>

...and it's not really fair either. If it were for them and the Stones, most people would have never heard of the blues and folk artists that they borrowed from.

I don't fault Led Zeppelin for doing covers of old blues songs. That's part of what he blues is about. I fault them for not giving credit or money to the estates and artists that they covered on their albums.

Robert Johnson's works were really raped by Led Zeppelin. There was a lawsuit brought against Zep back in the 90's due to that.

Don't get me wrong - I'm still a fan of Led Zep. :)
