Zeppelin to Get Grammy

Joplin, Lewis also to receive lifetime achievement awards

Led Zeppelin, Jerry Lee Lewis and the late Janis Joplin are among those slated to be honored with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys on February 13th at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

The other recipients are jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton, country pioneers the Carter Family, soul hitmakers the Staples Singers, country star Eddy Arnold, jazz drummer Art Blakey, composer Morton Gould and blues pianist Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins.

Songwriter extraordinaire Hoagy Carmichael, Soul Train creator Don Cornelius, Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion and recording artist and radio personality Dr. Billy Taylor will receive the Trustees Award, presented to important figures in music who contribute in a non-performing capacity. Producer Phil Ramone (Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel) will be honored with a technical Grammy.

"The Lifetime Achievement, Trustees and Technical Grammy Awards recognize music people who have made a lasting contribution to culture around the world," Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a statement. "These profoundly inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers and archetypal musicians, cultural ambassadors and technical visionaries. Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come."

I love Led Zeppelin, but disbanding in 1980 after the death of John Bonham isn't what I would call a "lifetime achievement".

Bonham was as much a part of he band as everyone. They weren't Zeppelin without him and they probably did the right thing. Can you name another band besides maybe the Beatles, and I wouldn't say they were, as influentual to the hard rock sound than Led Zeppelin? In their time they made some of the most remorable songs and sounds, personally I don't think that anyone surpasses them.

My brother-in-law had tickets to see them in Detroit and Bonham died before the show. He still has the tickets. :(

The only runner-up I can think of would be ACDC, even though their lead singer died.

RIP Bon Scot. :(

Name two bands with more albums in the top 50 of all time.

The Who. Although like Zeppelin, they really didn't play "hard rock", but their attitude, antics, loudness, and certain songs helped get it started.
Just listen to Live at Leeds.

Post of the year.

This recognition is long overdue for the greatest band that has ever lived.

By those standards, the Grateful Dead should get a lifetime achievement award too now that Jerry Garcia is dead. They're another example of an incredibly overrated band that was more about a cult of personality than any actual music that's been produced within the last quarter century (and in the Dead's case, for music that's not craptacularly bad it's more like forever). But I guess they haven't been disbanded for the death of one of their members for long enough, maybe once they reach RIP for 25 years they'll get one too.

You sir, are a totally clueless idiot that needs to stick to listening to Ashlee Simpson, because you just proved, by the drivel above, that you know absolutely nothing about music, whatsoever.

When I think of lifetime achievement, I think of a bands longevity. Bands like Aerosmith and KISS who are still pumping out the music decades later. I think of achievement as physical perseverance. No doubt Led Zeppelin is influential, in fact, it was Jimmy Page and Joe Satriani that made me pick up an electric guitar and learn it a long while back. I just think the name of that award is not correct. Lifetime accomplishment - yes. Lifetime achievement - no.

Why, because I'm old enough to actually remember hearing some of their music in first release and can put it into context of its era? I have no problem giving them a "lifetime achievement" award even though they've been dead for 25 years and Robert Plant hasn't done anything listenable in ages, and Jimmy Page, what has he done except for a crappy turn in the bastard child band "The Firm" a few years ago?

But for crying out loud, if you're going to give a "lifetime achievement" award, you'd think the band would have put out some new music within the living memory of a good portion of the viewing audience. There were actually *gasp* other bands and musicians who were contemporaries of Led Zep in the era which have given as much to the rock genre and for a longer period than Led Zeppelin did. How about Neil Young? Or better yet, Peter Gabriel for both his solo work and time with Genesis?
