i just purchased a LED 21.5 asus monitor, im running it at 1950x1050 60hz, it hurts my eyes though, i turned down the brightness and contrast but it still bothers my eyes, is there any other adjustments i can try? or would a higher refresh rate be better?

use sunglasses!
use a color marker of some sort and color it darker!
use a very small piece of paper and glue it on!

I just hate bright leds, especially in the color blue.

Hmm....Guess you misunderstood his problem ???

What kinda video card do you have?

Only other thing you could try would be play around with the cards settings such as brightness, gamma, etc.

Go into your nvidia controll panel and maybe select advanced view if needed and look for adjust desktop color settings. You might have to play around with the settings such as brightness, digital vibrance, gamma, etc. As at one time you may have tweaked the settings for your last monitor.

I think I'd just reset the monitor to factory defaults and play around in the nvidia contoll panel. :)

Only nvidia card I own is in my old ass Dell laptop GF6800 go so maybe nvidia guys could take over helping you if this doesn't work out for you.

Try backlighting the monitor
Basically you need a light that can go behind the monitor . It should be bright enough to light up the wall behind it some but not so bright it overwhelms. You want it to be diffuse light. I started doing this about 8 years ago after I went to a studio and they had the work room dark but the monitors all backlit. I had previously been getting headaches and wasn't sure of the cause. I never got one while I was working there and put 2+2 together and added back lighting at home. No more eye strain or headaches !

Besides some bias lighting (backlighting the monitor), you can just turn up the room lights brighter and/or turn down the brightness/contrast even more.

Whenever I get a new LCD monitor (I've owned around 8-10 of them) I always end up turning the brightness down to at least 50% and the contrast to 50-80% depending on the monitor itself and the room brightness. I also absolutely will not use my computer in the darkness at home (and am dismayed that people at LAN parties always want the room dark).

I use a 400 lumen 4100k CCFL stuck on something like this:

This isn't the exact lamp, you have to find one shorter than the monitor so it isn't visible when viewing the screen. Also, get one with a standard socket, not a rip-off energy wasting halogen or whatnot.

You are suppose to use 6500k for more accurate colours when your display is calibrated, but the light is too blue for me. CRTs are usually much dimmer than LCDs (in my experience), so it's probably the brightness and not the LEDs which the bias lighting should help with.

return for refund and get a different monitor. LED =! Better, nor does LED = Worse... LED is a technology utilized for backlight and it can be implemented well or implemented badly. You should buy based on model not based on technology. (that is, read reviews and find the best monitor you can at your price point; and if it doesn't work out for you, try the second and third best)
Companies have return policies for a reason.

I thought it was hilarious, was picturing him taking a sharpee to the screen. All better!

Sorry for your monitor woes, unfortunately I think every monitor has its con. I would try the back lighting before giving up on it. Many places will not accept a monitor return, ie Newegg.

It seems to be getting more difficult for the reviews to keep up with the models, if you try to find reviews on models that newegg currently has, only a very few are even out there to read. By the time they come out the manufacturer has replaced the model.

I purchased this POS Asus monitor a month ago and want to throw it against the wall. It is so oddly bright, colors are horrible and the text is blurry.

I will never go away from a good ViewSonic again :(

Its your refresh rate. You need 120hz my friend. For your eyes to not be bothered and things to be smooth and no lag.... thx
refresh rate is NOT the same thing on LCDs as it is on CRTs so 60Hz should not be bothering your eyes.

Coming from a CRT to even a LCD will bother your eyes. It takes a while to get used to it but it is worth it. Just soldier through it.

this. helps to turn the brightness down a TON, as most monitors come from the factory with the brightness turned way up, since they stick out and look better on the sales floor that way.

When I bought my G15 it hurt my eyes after awhile, leading to a headache/nausea. Now I usually watch it with a light on in the room, or watch in all dark just for a couple of hours. Same thing when I first got an LCD monitor. Displays these days are so damn bright. I eventually adjusted to the LCD but my plasma still gives me problems after extended session of gaming if I dont have other lights on in the room.

I just went to Home Depot and got a 6500k florescent tube (the short one) throw a diffuser on there and velcro mount to the back of the monitor. Our eyes/brains don't like that much extreme contrast of a lit screen against dark background.

Also very true. Some of them are ridiculously bright.

yup bias lighting, ikea grono or such behind the monitor works, ikea sells 3-5 watt cf type bulbs as well. you don't want the bias lighting to be blinding as well

I have to turn the gamma all the way down on mine so it doesn't hurt my eyes. I like deep dark colors anyway. I can keep the brightness and contrast at default.
