Simple question...is there a realistic lifespan for the blue LED on the logo of this mouse? My comp is usually on at least 10 hours per day, and I don't want the LED to burn out because it looks so beautiful :p.

Thanks,

:) he he he, AH HA HA HA ROTFL :D

LED lifespan...

Good one. :) Last I checked, LEDs are expected to last around about 11 years (that's constant use, btw)
I've never seen a burnt out LED in all my life. :p

11 years? You serious? :p. I had a bunch of cases that housed PII CPUs, about 4 years back...barely used them. Two of those cases had Power LEDs that wouldn't light up (just tested them 3 weeks ago). Maybe they were defective :p.

It could be that you plugged in the power LED's connectors on the MB the wrong way.

I do that all the time.

I don't think I've ever seen an LED burn out...

It's easy to get them backwards, and you can break them....but just die from normal use? No...we have some little LEDs in the "circuit shop" at UVic...I'm sure they are 10 years old...(the chip that class uses is the M68HC11...that's gotta be 15 years old...)

It depends on the junction material, operating temperature, and forward operating current. For high efficienty red LED's, expect a MTBF of >1,000,000 hours! If higher brightness is desired, it could shorten this to 80,000 hours. (which is still almost 8 years, 24/7!)

Blue and White LED's have shorter lifespans. They still last longer than any other (powered) lightsource including HID lighting.

The LED on your mouse will probably last thirty years under normal use. 30 years from now mice will be in history books! :Q

BTW, LED's will have a VERY short lifespan if they get too hot from excessive current. Shuttle mainboards were famous for putting out too much voltage for the power LED. I remember the green power LED's glowing YELLOW before it died.

Cheers!

I thought there was a thread recently about a flashlight that used a white LED. It's main benefit was said to be longevity (dependability).

White LED's have very long lifetimes compared to incandescent lamps. They use far less power thus the batteries last very long. Lastly, the light output is soft and diffused and is of very high quality (colour rendering).

For more information about this exciting technology, go here.

Cheers!
