I think it would be pretty tough to be cutthroat on the court and then turn around and not be 100% self confident off of the court.

This. Nearly all successful professional athletes are, to some degree and in some form, full of themselves. They have to be in order to handle the pressure to perform they're consistently put under. Without a rock-solid (and often times somewhat inflated) sense of self, they'd crack.
They're successful because they can go into a situation and KNOW that they're going to do well and that they deserve to do well. It's also why, if they don't do well, they can easily shake it off and KNOW they'll do well next time.
