There's a guy at work who cruises the break areas in the building, monitoring the change slots and floors near the vending machines. I see him dart in and pick up loose change almost every day.

Sadly, I've also seen him wear a large Star of David belt buckle on occasion.. so, way to support the stereotype, dude. ;)

lol they actually make credit card vending machines? I guess if you're really desperate and don't have any change... but I hate paying a service charge for such a small purchase.
You already do pay a service charge for using cash: Taxes. Physical currency doesn't manufacture itself for free. ;)

I do wonder how that ends up working out: The costs of digital money versus the costs of constantly refreshing, replacing, and handling the supply of paper and metal money.

Taxes are separate, you pay that no matter what method you use to pay.

Wait so there's no service charge on CC's? Or is that a US thing? I always thought debit/credit transactions had a service charge, or is it only debit that does?
Must suck for you. I was up in Montreal this past weekend and didn't get charged extra for using my CC.

You see, the Star of David is associated with Judaism. People of Jewish decent are associated with the stereotype of caring about money or being "cheap" or "frugal."

So you see, this guy seems to proclaim his Jewish faith, while simultaneously "scrounging" for loose change several times per day at his work. Ergo, he could be said to be demonstrating the aforementioned stereotype.

Did this help your confusion?

Where I work the vending machines do not take change change at all.......
Everything is free...we just go to the machine and choose what we desire and push the proper buttons and we get what we choose... :)

True, though what I was getting at was that the only reason cash is "free" is because its various costs are all rolled into other things: Taxes, and the operating expenses of various businesses. Safes, armored trucks, counting machines - all that has to be paid for by someone.

It was just a semi-related thought on what the actual expense/savings of a significant move to digital money would be - the main difference is that digital money makes it a bit easier to itemize some of its associated expenses, such as secure high-uptime servers. You don't usually get assessed a "minting and cash-transport fee" when you use cash. :)
Usually.

Yeah, but he said he wore an atheist shirt, not a Jewish shirt.

I'd like to hear other fellow Canadians confirm this because that sounds... wrong. Are you saying you get charged service fees in Canada?

The only time I get charged fees here is when drawing from an ATM that is NOT my bank. I get no other fees on credit, debit, etc. In fact when I use my debit card at certain stores (say Walmart) they ask if I want cash back. If I say yes I can get cash without even the usual ATM charge. It's awesome.

There are no service charges when I use my VISA or MC credit card, and no service charges for my TD Bank debit card either, as long as I have a minimum balance in my account.

I see now - I was totally confused, as I thought Howard was quoting my post, not Jedi's fixed duplicate of mine that made absolutely no sense to anyone.

Sorry Howard.
