Leaving your change in vending machine?

I guess some people here at work don't realize that the machine returns change. Some items in the machine cost $1.25 and finding $0.75 in the change slot is pretty common. Wtf? I've stopped going to the bank for rolled quarters to do laundry, finding quarters this way a few times a week lets me stock up. If the price says $1.25, don't you wonder where the rest of your change went?

I used to do pretty well with newspaper boxes when I was younger. Just walking down the street and sticking my finger in change slots would get me a bunch of change.

It's meant as a tip to the vending machine stock guy. You're stealing his income!

It is strange.

The soda machine where I work charges 75 cents, and every time I get a soda (maybe 3 or 4 times a month) there's a quarter or two left in the change slot form before.

I know a quarter isn't a lot, but why would you just leave it?

I like finding change in them, it's like "score!". When I worked at the hospital it was common for me to leave the change in it though, if I went to the cafeteria to get food and then got a pop on the way back to my office, my hands were too full to grab the change and pocket it so I'd just leave it.

And to pay 75c for a pop would be awesome. I don't think I was alive the last time you could get one that cheap here out of a machine. They just went up to 1.75 a few years back. 1.50 for a can is typical.

i only use credit card vending machines

wish we had some around here. At my daughters gymnastics place they have drink machines and snacks. I hate having to have change to get the kids something after practice.

As for leaving the change i know my kids check them all the time. They get excited at finding $.50 or so every now and then. I think some do it for that reason. they know kids check them.

My time is better spent not getting such a trivial amount of money out of the machine.

Your time must be valuable. Assuming it takes 2" to retrieve 25¢, it works out to an hourly rate of $450. You must be making at least twice that for it not to be worth your time. I wish I had your job.

Sheesh. I got uppity when they recently went from 1.25 to 1.35 for 20oz bottles.

lol they actually make credit card vending machines? I guess if you're really desperate and don't have any change... but I hate paying a service charge for such a small purchase.

i remember back in the arcade days when i ran out of money at the arcade i would always go to pretty much every game in the arcade to see if someone's quarter fell through the coin slot and they didn't take it out. could usually find at least 2 quarters or so to play more games lol.

Whipper-snapper.

I used to walk home from school with a buddy, around the time that the "new" coke came out and flopped, they needed some way to get rid of all the stock. So, they put in in a vending machine @ IGA for $0.10 per can. It was sweet to be able to get a pop on the way home every single day. And it was equally sad when they no longer stocked it.

Service charge? You aren't charged anything extra for using a CC at the vending machine.

ATMs do, so figured the vending machine would. So they don't charge at all?

Your bank still charges though so it's still at least $1.25. There's usually 2 charges associated with a debit or credit card transaction. The store's. (whether it's an ATM or a purchase) and then the bank's. Bank is usually $1.25, ATMs are usually $1.25 or $1.75 from what I've seen.

Using your CC on a vending machine is just like using your CC at walmart, or bestbuy, or wherever. YOU won't be charged extra. The vending machine/store might be charged $.xx per transaction though.

Not sure I'm understanding what you mean by the bank charging $1.25. For ATMs, yeah I know there are sometimes convenience fees from the ATM bank or your bank. But buying a soda from a vending machine is NOT the same as trying to get cash from an ATM.

$.25 or more is what it takes for me to bend down and pick up money. Relatively speaking, I am poor compared to many people in my office, so maybe their tolerances are higher, as I often find extra money in the vending machines when I get my change.

Wait so there's no service charge on CC's? Or is that a US thing? I always thought debit/credit transactions had a service charge, or is it only debit that does?

there are service charges to the merchant...these are not allowed to be charged to the customer.

I'd like to hear other fellow Canadians confirm this because that sounds... wrong. Are you saying you get charged service fees in Canada?

The only time I get charged fees here is when drawing from an ATM that is NOT my bank. I get no other fees on credit, debit, etc. In fact when I use my debit card at certain stores (say Walmart) they ask if I want cash back. If I say yes I can get cash without even the usual ATM charge. It's awesome.
