Leaving TA S@H

Just wanted to let y'all know that as soon as the race with DSLR is over I plan to stop crunching WU's for S@H. Overall I had an enjoyable experience and would like to thank you folks for the help you have given and for the community spirit which is so evident. I hope that the slowdown problems are resolved for those of you who are staying on with the project. I basically signed up after reading a post and getting excited about the race, and also just to see what the experience was like, as I've never before participated in a distributed computing project.

Take care 🙂

hey, thanks for helping us out and kicking some serious butt with us 😀. don't forget we have a TON of other projects we partake in, seti is just one of them. and to come back here anytime for help, to catch an ear, a sholder to lean on and hopfully in the VERY near future some TA and anandtech Gear (and perhaps some chances to win some :Q).

Chuckwits,

I think you mean that you are not leaving the TeAm, merely taking an indefinite leave of absence. If you leave your already crunched WUs with the TeAm then you will always be a TeAm member 😀

You never know, the bandwidth problems may subside and you might get that Seti fever again. I would encourage you to try one of the other DC projects. I know our fellow crunchers on ECCp and RC5 could use some help maintaining their positions in the world rankings. 🙂

Hey, thanks for all the kind words🙂 As I hinted at in my previous post, I am considering another DC project, just haven't yet researched any to see what is available. I thought I heard something about a project which was supposed to be working on a cure for Alzheimer's disease; if there is one then that is the one that I want to join. If not that, then I guess my second choice would be the cancer project if it is still running.

Anyway, I will still be frequenting the Hot Deals forum and by no means am I leaving AnandTech! 🙂

Thanks again, it's been really great here in DC.

Edit: Woops! After reading my original post I now see I didn't hint about joining another DC project at all! 😱
😱

Could someone please explain how I can submit my last WU without downloading another to fill the cache? I just now tried to change my cache to 0 but it kept defaulting to 30 which is where I have had it...I then tried setting cache size to 1 and was successful; after I crunch the remaining WU's in my cache I'll want to submit them all and just not receive any more...can that be done?

Thanks in advance!

When you change the desired cache size to 0, then make sure you click "Save Config". Or, you could let it start to download the next WU, then just delete the directory from your computer. Seti sends out the same WU many times for data checking and consistancy, and also because they planned on people downloading a unit and not returning it 🙂

I hope you find another DC project if you have just gone off Seti, hopefully for TA. I'm glad you have had fun while with us 🙂

Be sure to pop in and say hi every now and again 🙂

Let me know if you find out anything on this. My mother is in the final stages of this terrible affliction.

Ask and ye shall receive linky

I have watched two grandparents go through this terrible disease so I may be looking at diverting some resources.

ChuckWits,
Thanks! so much for your help and participation in the SETI TA vs DSLR race. As others have said, feel free to stick around even if you chose not to run a DC project. 😀

LOL@ShotgunSteve! 😀

So Folding@Home also covers Alzheimer's? Cool...I think I'll divert some resources to that, too, once the DSLR and the MTR are finished. My father-in-law has been recently diagnosed with this and I know R&D is making great progress in uncovering the workings of this disease.

So Folding@Home also covers Alzheimer's? Cool

The simulation of the folding of one of the proteins that is known to cause Alzheimer's is what is being looked at in F@H. When that protein misfolds, it appears to trigger the disease. Prion is another to be looked at (if it hasn't been started already), the misfolding of it being a cause of Mad Cow's disease.

ChuckWits - glad to see ya staying with the TeAm! I think you gave alot of us a bit of a heart attack! :Q

😛

After the race, I'm not sure if I'm going to stay with seti or move off to folding@home. I'm still debating it, but I know I'm going to be doing somthing having to do with DC 🙂

I didn't know folding@home did so much stuff. I think I will also divert some cycles to thatproject as well when this race and MTR is over.

Glad to hear your not leavin'. Stop by often 🙂

Will the Folding@Home client work right alongside of SETI? I tried and it gave me an error message: winfah.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

????

That sounds like the screensaver/graphical version of F@H? I'm thinking the CLI version was fahclient.exe or something like that???

I've run just about everything under the sun with just about everything under the sun - as long as they're both text clients. 🙂

[EDIT: And Smokeball - I did finally get back to answer your other question about SETI & email from last night. Was exhausted and went to bed. The thread fell off the 1st page if you want to check it out. 🙂]

Smokeball, sorry to hear of your mother. Mine too has Alzheimer's, which is why I want to divert to that project. It sounds as though there is enough interest to start a TA F@H project, if there isn't already one in the works.

Huh Huh, can we?? Huh?? Pweese??

Team AnandTech

Poof, Thanks for the explanation in the other thread. 🙂

I may download the F@H Client again. I noticed there was the GUI and CLI and chose the CLI version. 😉

Yes, any of the DC projects at Intel's site are good too. They might not have attracted as much attention because they don't have the support for the wide range of OS's that SETI does, nor do they have the performance and status monitors that are seen with SETI. Us power users like to, well, have power.😉

I may download the F@H Client again. I noticed there was the GUI and CLI and chose the CLI version.

They recently changed to F@H2 (thus a changed client) and I just checked the name - "fa2console.exe" is the one you want. Hope you get it going okay though... 🙂
