Leaving one company to work for one of their customers

Due to the economy, my company is being re-absorbed by its parent company and several of our large customers are leaving.

My boss pulled me aside this afternoon to talk. During the discussion, he mentions that the CIO for our largest customer had mentioned me - he was curious if I would be willing to work for them instead. Because we are downsizing, a couple of people from my team will soon be laid off, probably within two months. My boss didn't flat out say that was the reason he was mentioning it, but he did imply it several times, ie: "Because of the merger, nobody is really sure what things will be like for our jobs in a few months", and, "I'm not referring you to him - he had mentioned you - I'm just someone with some insider knowledge that would like to see you doing well".

So, yeah, I'm about to get laid off. I guess it makes sense for them to help me transition out of the position so they don't have to deal with laying me off?

Anyway - I talked to the CIO from this other company today and he asked that I email him my resume tomorrow, and he will find a time for us to talk. Obviously, since I have worked with them for over a year now, I know exactly what their company needs. Do I address my summary paragraph directly towards that company, or do I leave it broad? I'm wondering the same thing for my objective - do I just flat out say I'm looking for _exactly_ what they have?

This is all a little different since I already know the people that who will be interviewing me, I guess I'm not really sure what to expect.

Cliffs:
About to get laid off
CIO from a customer company interested in me
Need to give him resume tomorrow and schedule meeting
Not sure how to address the resume

Cover letter should address the company you are applying to, resume should address you from an objective stance.

I think an "objective" is a waste of space on a resume. I haven't had it on my resume since the first co-op job I got many, many years ago in college.

As for the cover letter...it better be addressed directly to the company you are applying for and indicated exactly why you feel you can benefit the company due to your experience.

Yeah, you might be right. On this one I kept it to a very short single sentence.

That's how I plan on putting the cover letter together. I guess it just feels different because I already know exactly what the company needs - sorta feels like cheating almost, you know 😉
