leaving my job, but its a somewhat odd situation

i have been working as an engineer in the automotive industry for about 3 years now. but i really never liked my job, so i gave my two weeks notice on friday. i kinda viewed quitting my job as a mental choice to live my life instead of chasing money.

my plan was to take some time off and hike part of the appalachian trail. i just wanted ] time to clear my head, blah, blah, blah.

anyhow, i told my manager on friday that i was leaving on good terms and it wasn't because of money. i think i also mentioned that i didn't have any other offers.

now here is the strange part. i have had my resume on monster since i started my current job. occasionally, i will get calls from headhunters (who i ignore), but that is it. but oddly enough, when i came home for lunch after giving my 2 weeks notice, i had a message on my answering machine from daimler chrysler. they wanted to speak with me about an engineering position related hybrid vehicles (which is what i work on now).

then, when i came back from lunch, my manager told me that the president of my company (actually, there are two presidents right now....kinda a transition period) wanted to meet with me and two managers monday morning (so thats 2 presidents, 2 managers, and me). additionally, they told me not to tell the hr department that i was leaving.

so, i really just dont know what to think. i have this meeting on monday and i have this call from chrysler, but i really just want to get away for a while. i thought after i gave my notice, things would calm down and i could think, but its exactly the opposite.

it seems to be that this is like one final test, to see if im serious about not chasing money...

cliffs
1. gave two weeks notice friday
2. come home for lunch friday, find message from chrysler, saying they are interested in me
3. come back from lunch, my company tells me i have a meeting with the pres monday morning. also say not to tell hr about my plans.
4. i just want to be a damn hippie for while

*Update*

man, whats up with chrysler's timing? i had written them off, because they never got back to me after the initial phone call.

and i had pretty much made up my mind to go hiking for the next 1-2 months, including spending about 2 hours at my local camping gear store yesterday, trying to figure out what i needed to get.

then, this morning (actually 11am), while im still half sleeping, i hear the chrysler guy on my voicemail. so, i called him back and now i have an interview on monday. i really dont even want the job, but i figure ill listen to what they have to say (although the interview sounds like its going to be a pita). they are going to have to make me an insane offer to stay in the area. but it does sound like they are desperate for help.

*Update 2*

well, chrysler made me a nice offer, but i rejected it. so they made a slightly nicer offer and i rejected that too. so im all set to hike part of the AT in july.

feels good not to sell out. 🙂

if they really want to keep you, they will let you take any amount of time you need. You are in a great position, you hold all the cards.

Did you sign a non-compete agreement when you started there?

several of my coworkers have left for other automotive companies, so i assume not. but not really sure. all i remember is signing the standard confidentiality agreement.

You need to quit using illicit drugs. They obviously affect your mental capabilities in an adverse way. Just go to work and shut up.

touchy situation here... if you hate your job.. then leave. but, remember, unless you work for yourself, you will probably hate your next job to.

remember its a job. career is a word that should have been retired the second it was created.

by the way, i haven't told my company about the call from chrysler. like i said, i just told them i felt like leaving.

good advice, and that's pretty much what im thinking.

i mean, what if chrysler offers me some crazy salary? i still dont think i would be happy. as i get older, money doesn't mean as much too me.

C'mon man, meet the Big Cheese's, accept offer with massive salary spike, and state you can't start for 2 months time. Easy

I'm curious what sort of "crazy" offer you think you might get, or even what you are making now that makes you feel like you've sold out to your company... and even MORE curious as to how old you are.

There is a big difference between _hating_ your job and just not being happy with it. If you just think that there should be more to your life, that's probably independant of what you are doing at work. Are you sure the job is the problem?

Yeah, I wasn't asking about the non-compete because I thought that's what they wanted to talk to you about (although it very well may be), I asked about it because I'd think that an engineer in the auto industry would have to sign one, and you'd be violating it. Not that I care, but your company's lawyers might. 🙂

well, i really dont think i will be happy at any job that i have to sit at a desk for 75% of the day. and yes, i think there should be more to my life...but i base that on the fact that i spend 10 hours per day sitting in misery waiting to go home.

while i find hybrid vehicles fascinating, 3/4 of my current job revolves around sending emails to japan, waiting for a response, then sending a response to ford. fun fun.

Such wise words!

The truth is we live for our house so much that we never get to enjoy the house itself. 🙂

The way I look at it is any amount of money or stuff will not ever make me happy. Never.

desk you should stop living for stuff and live for yourself by going on that adventure you want to go on. Its better than any amount of money or stuff.

how about this...

they will negotiate a little with you.

Tell them how you feel (honestly). Tell them you are at a point in your life when you are trying to figure a few things out...and it's NOT affecting your work, but you feela little lost.

If they want you to stay (and to be honest, most people don't LOVE what they do), then ask for a little sebatacle. maybe 6 months?

That will never happen. He will be fired on the spot.

I wouldn't say never...that is defeatest.

If they really, really want him to stay, they'll agree to his terms...if not? no sweat off his $ss, he was going to leave anyway.

desk, consider asking for a leave of absence. That way, if after you clear your head, you think GM really is the place for you, you still have a place.

imtim83 can't you go hang out in a child molestor thread or something? You fit in much better.

The only reason you brought up that subject is because you are one.
