Leaving in an hour for apheresis for the first time

I've donated whole blood many times before but today is my first time doing apheresis. For those who don't know it's a procedure where they take out your blood, spin it in a machine and separate off the platelets, then put the rest back into you. Platelets are needed especially for people with some types of cancer. I'm O- so they treat me really well when I go in 🙂

I'm just thankful I managed to get rid of the cold I had earlier this week.

Has anyone else here donated platelets before? How'd it go?

UPDATE:

That was pretty cool actually. It feels weird when the cold blood (they don't re-heat it) goes back in your body, and my lips and face went all numb from the anti-coagulant they put in. They also took an extra cup of plasma for burn victims. On the plus side, I got to watch Life of Brian during the donation.

Isn't that the same as the Double Red? If so yah, I've done it - really wasn't that bad, and got out of work for an hour and a half.

i do the silly thing every time i give blood, which is every time they let me, its really no different then normal

it will feel a lil strange when they strat pumping stuff back into you and its colder then what went out, but other then that you get to lie in a confier bed and they give you a blanket and bring you drinks

and as dougp said you get outta work longer for it if you give at work

Apparently I can go every 2 weeks for this. With whole blood it's every 8 weeks.

do they warm it back up before they put it back in?

yes its warm but its not body temp and it feels a lil strange but thats about it

I could do some damage with this quote.
Remember, it's only necrophilia if the body is room temperature.

I donate whole blood. I have never done blood parts. I was about to donate again monday but I had a bad dental infection recently and was on alot of antibiotics and pain medications.

I used to sell plasma years ago. $40 per week. I have a faint scar from the needles, now.

This, I think rates are up some and I could get some reading in while I was doing it if I could ignore the tvs.
