Leaving home

I hate living at home... Supposing I only have approx 600 dollars, about 7500 dollar credit card limit, no car and no job... how would I be able to move out and get a place of my own with NO reliance from my parents? Total cut-off. I have around a year left of college, and my grades suffered/are suffering horribly due to a 3 hour per day commute. Tuition according to the schools' site is approx 6-8k a year(2 semesters)... I might have a lead on housing for around $300 a month... I don't know if I can withstand another semester of commuting... especially with my upcoming(what looks to be like a) heavy courseload... I also have/had very little time to socialize, and its killing me inside emotionally... everytime I mention wanting to dorm or get an apartment, my dad berates me for not graduating in 4 years and makes the stipulation that its his way(stay at home and continue to commute, yet have tuition/insurance/food paid for) or the highway... I'm about/near/at to the point where I'd rather choose the highway than be the burden, my dad implies that I am, to him.

so I turn to ATOT... whats my best course of action? no poll, want comments...

Are you 18? If not, you're still legally your parent's property.

If you are over 18.

1. Forget about living off your Credit Cards. That is a battle you will not win. Trust me on that one. 😱
2. No job? You are fvckd. Living costs money. You have no money, you can't live. Get a job. Save some money, then tell your parents buh-bye. Until then, suck it up; we've all been there.

you dads a dick... cant you get financial aid? it might pay for tuition and you'd be able to get your parents to pay for housing. Sucks that you have to drive 3 hours a day for school... that must kill your social life.

i'm 23 -_- living at home cuz its still "free"(cost is my emotional and mental state of living at home)

you might also want to consider taking out loans to pay off tuition for next year...that'll be a lot better than putting tuition on a credit card.

social life? ATOT's one of the closest thing to a social life I have for the past year or so... I only see my friends at bible study at most once or twice a week, depending on my programming assignments :*(

and no, my dad wont' pay for a cent if I leave the house... insurance, car, everything... gone. (i'll be taking my computer and clothes and other stuff tho... maybe I'll just take the car haha)

well hell, would you really need a car when you're in college?

I know its still good that I've got a place to live and such, but being yelled at when I don't do well in class, to which I attribute the commute and unproductive study environment(I need an internet connection to do my programs... need connection to a mainframe, and the only good place for that besides the eye-killing 60hz refresh rate 1024x768 monitors in the computer labs, is at home on my 1800fp)

no way, i would get a job get some cash and move out. just cuz living at home is free doesnt mean its the best thing to do

Stay at home. My parents moved off to Florida and I stayed here in TX to stay w/ friends. I make $700 bi-weekly and it pays for bills and rent and all my nessecities just fine, but I'm real short on cash if an emergency comes up, and it takes a while to save up for basic fun things, like new clothes or computer stuff.

You at least need a job, and don't get a credit card. If you have one, don't use it. It will get you in a big mess...seen it happen to a ton of my friends, so I'm kinda scared about getting one. I just use a Visa check card for all my stuff.

This is how my budget roughly runs.

$490/month for rent. I got lucky and found an inexpensive, but small, 1 bedroom apartment right outside of surburbia and just barely into Dallas where the fun is 🙂

~$100/month for electricity cuz I like it cold.

~$40/month for basic phone.

~$100/month for cable internet and basic digital cable.

~$7/month for water

~$180/month for insurance cuz I'm a bad driver 😛

Car is paid off.

I'm usually left w/ around $400 fun money at the end of the month, which usually ends up mainly going into a savings account. I'm planning on using it for emergengies.

I know, it's prolly uncalled for for me to post all my info, but I'm trying to keep you from making a mistake that will nag at you years down the road, financially. I'm in a similar situation. First thing you need to do is land a job BEFORE moving. Do that, carefully plan and budget, and THEN move out. I get $100 a month from my 'rents, which helps, but that stops next year. I use that to help w/ my car insurance.

There are times I miss having less responsibility, and there are times I love the extra freedom. It's worth it, but you need to be fairly well grounded in an ok paying job to make it. Housing for $300 a month is great, you simply need to find something fairly close to where you live and GET A JOB. Living off of credit cards will not work.

Hope this helps.. I'm not trying to come off as some wise old know it all, but I have learned a lot in the past few months.

wtf?

~$100 for cable internet and basic digital cable?

Man I would cut on that. I would get cable £25 for 600kb here in England and Sky digital family pack ~ £20 ish or less can't remember. # £45 a month.

So what sort of package do you get for $100 or is that normal for cable internet and digital cable?

I live in England and that seems very pricey to me.......

no... its the environment where I feel constantly reminded that I didn't graduate in 4 years(3years of my college career when I did get to live in a dorm... I admit it was CS that killed me then... but now that I've gotten my act in gear, I can't "stretch my wings" due to commuting)...

I even mentioned to my dad that I wanted to enlist into one of the armed forces reserve units next semester because I want to serve my country and even get some side income to help my dad pay my tuition(my own initiative)... but NOooo, he berated me with his argument stemming partly from the basis that I didn't graduate in 4 years...

Even though I'm almost twice your age, I feel your pain, but hang in there if you can.

If not, I think you've got an excellent idea with the Reserves or National Guard. It will give you money to pay for school, and you'll get a monthly check for drill pay. Depending on your rank, it should be about $150.00 or so. I'm basing that on what I think an E3 PFC would get for a weekend drill. You'll make lots of friends, and learn more about yourself than you think you know, and it would be a way of showing your parents you're serious about moving out on your own and taking care of yourself.

Go talk to a National Guard Recruiter, seriously.

How about in the short term, reduce the number of interactions with your dad, try not be around the house when your dad is there or awake. Long term, find job near the campus and when you are able look for affordable housing.

I know a guy who just moved out like that recently. All I have to say is that he's so screwed. Stay home, finish school. It's the best thing you can do. What's a few more months vs many more years of life ahead.

Cable Internet here (Western PA) is $45/mo. Expanded basic cable (all 60+ non-digital channels) is $37/mo. I was paying $70/mo for cable (the 60+ regular channels, plus 40 digital channels) until I cut back last week. Sounds like you have it pretty good 😉

3 hour commute is nothing compared to how much you will need to work to pay rent, food, etc. Suck it up for another year or whatever, then get a good job and move out. If you dig yourself a big hole with credit card debt you'll be regretting it for years.

dude he has it so good that he has a $hitty home life and has to commute 3 hours everyday. I know there's tons of people out there in worse situations but i doubt he has it "good". Yea you compare him to some homeless guy, he's doing pretty good but you compare him to another random college student and chances are he's living pretty $hitty compared to the other guy
