I just got back from there in January. If you are into antiquities go to the Getty Villa in Malibu. It's free, just make a reservation ahead of time. I found it fascinating. Hike up Runyon Canyon. Drive south to Ranchos Palos Verdes and hike the cliffs. Tar pits are OK I guess. Make sure you have a car.
 
This is all very interesting, but I notice nobody has said anything about tmobile or ultramobile. Are they so terrible nobody uses them, or does it not really matter?
 
Do some driving up/down the PCH if you have a chance. Once you're out of the city-ish area the views are incredible.

Also look up some mexican taco trucks because they're awesome around LA and damn cheap too.

Other things to try would be AYCE korean bbq and sushi because there's tons of great ones.
