after 42 delays i'm finally going on this hike. 200 miles on the AT, solo. Hawk Mountain in PA to Harpers Ferry in WV. hopefully, i won't get eaten by a bear. if i die, i bequeath my modest postcount to the Harriet Tubg!rl.

im taking my sd300, 1 gig of memory, and 3 batteries. so hopefully i should get some good shots. i also have no clue how im getting back from harpers ferry, so if someone lives down there and wants to give me a ride home (or part way) let me know! ;)

1. a pistol won't save you from a bear (unless its small?)
2. can't bears run at 55 mph?
3. can't humans run at 10-15 mph?

How long will the hike take? Are you carrying all the supplies with you?

According to my field methods (geography) professor, you can get rid of black bears by whacking them with sticks. I assume you won't be running into any grizzlies.. They are the ones that run faster than horses and will own you.

Make sure you have someone keeping track of your progress... I'm assuming you have someone monitoring your progress, etc....

Good luck! Sounds AWESOME.

wow.. nice!

it took u 4months from quitting your job to finally going on this hike?

what do you plan on doing after the hike?

outrun a bear? i'd be more worry about out running an aligator.

btw- humans cant outrun an alligator. u gota climb a tree and wait till it goes away or something like that

again, congrats on living your dream!

Where you gonna hide the 2 pounds of dope? Enjoy!
PS: don't forget the Thermarest. Best item you can carry on a trek.

Running Speed: Lean bears can exceed 30 mph. Can run uphill, downhill, or on level ground. Fat bears in winter coats overheat and tire quickly.

so bring along a winter coat. if u run into a lean bear, throw the coat on it and hope that it overheats and tires quickly :p

cousin survived getting between a mother bear and her cubs, somehow, by just standing as tall as frickin possible, he was doing repairs on a tree stand, and had no gun on him then he ran like a mofo yelling for his dad to be on the lookout.

but my cousin was like 22 and 6'3 200 or so when this happened.

yeh, i had/have some trouble with my ankle (displaced bone) and my knee (unknown), so i was trying to wait till they healed up a bit. by the time my leg felt good, it was in the middle of summer. and while hiking in 95 degree weather sucks, trying to sleep in 85 degree weather sucks more. so i waited until the temperature dropped.

after the hike, i think im going to join americorps (or something equivalent) just so i can feel good about society again. but eventually, i want to be an author.

I highly recommend you take a sidearm for protection. If you are a really good shot you could kill a bear with it, but I would take it for other reasons.

Get a bear bell and wear it, especially if you are going solo. The bear bell will jingle as you walk and the noise will aleart the animals that you are there and you won't surprise and scare them (which is a bad thing to do). They usually have a magnet that will stop the bell from ringing too.

If you were going with other people...usually enough noise is made between talking, etc.

Also..carry some rocks in an accessible pocket. If you encounter a bear, make yourself as tall/big looking as possible, make loud noises and throw the rocks at the bear. That will usually scare them off. You need to carry some because you do not want to stoop down to get some and make yourself appear smaller to the bear.

EDIT - only if they are aggressive do that...if you see them froma distance, it is best to wait until they leave.

I would *love* to do that some day, though I'd probably like some company. Only real hike I've ever been on was about 1/10th of what you're doing, out in Colorado. Can't wait to do it again.
