This thread isn't about a cat. It is about a simple thing you can do to make your GF very happy. Leave the light on for her. If you are worried about the minisule cost, buy a flourescent light bulb that uses 1/4th the power, with the same amount of light output, and lasts for 5+ years. A three pack of them is on sale for ~$4.50 total at Menards this week.

It probably just sleeps when you're gone anyway. All my cats have no problem moving around in the darkness.

Yeah, tell her that her pussy doesn't mind the dark.

Light is warm, comforting, inviting, and useful. Why wouldn't it be so for domestic animals?

Because cats are noctural and humans are not? Just a thought.

I'm not leaving a lamp on just in case my cat decides to spontanously learn how to read or something. If he wants light, he can jump up and flip the light switch like everyone else.

:) cats are people too.

Only if your cat is staying at the Hotel Six they do leave the light on!

Cats cannot see in total darkness. However they see much better than we do in dim light.

A little 5w fluorescent light will be plenty and it won't be expensive to run.

My wife does the same... it's retarded. There's plenty of light coming in from the windows for the cats. At least it's just a ~13W flourescent bulb she leaves on.

Do not leave the light on at home. It is unnecessary and wastes energy. Just do what I did. Go to PetsMart and ask for the Feline Miners Helmet. Works great! It's a little yellow helmet that secures to the cat's head with a velcro strap. It even has a small compartment on top for catnip. Drives the cat crazy - she can smell the cat dope but can't find it. You won't be dissappointed!

My pets are a part of my family. Since I do not have any kids of my own yet, I always tell people my pets are my kids. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats. I actually pay attention to my pets unlike our some of my neighbors. I always leave a light or two on in the house or outside if it's during the summer the for my pets.

Edit: I also leave the radio on.

How do you know what an animal prefers? Whether the cat likes the darkness (mind you, this is darkness for a few hours until the owners get home) is irrelevant because it doesn't justify someone leaving the light on all day and incurring the unnecessary electricity cost. Even if the lamp is on a timer, it's just seems ridiculous to go so far to "please" your pet when you're not even sure what the animal prefers.
I have no idea what an animal prefers. I assume the owners of the cat have a better inclination about the wants and desires of their pet than either you or I. Why do you get to decide whether or not the trivial amount of wasted electricity is unnecessary?

I mean, I could argue that that the amount of electricity you used to run you PC while you typed up that response was even more wasteful, but I won't, as my opinions on how you spend your money and on what are of little-to-no consequence anyone else.

You sure are defensive. It sucks to be wrong, huh?

Where in the response do you feel that he's wrong? First he makes an argument, then he's countered with someone else's opinion (BTW, which doesn't even answer CK's questions). Then he has to clarify his post again. So where in this is CK wrong?
Reading Comprehension. Give it a try sometimes.
"It sucks to be wrong, huh?" - sound familiar?

Just like both of our cats. They like the family channel because most of their programming has female voices. I guess most cats prefer female voices over male for some reason.

yeah you're right, but it is not the money that gets me. I don't care about the electric bill. Since she has moved in the bill has doubled anyway. Its about the cats not needing the light. I will leave it on and keep her happy. She is good to me.

You should be leaving a light, or radio or TV on if your pets get anxious. My dog chews more if there is no ambient noises to distract him we've found. The cat on the other hand, she's got the dog for entertainment. We usually leave a kitchen light (over the stove type) on if we're out at night.

I presume that you have a kitten? If you have, then using a night light light might bedoing damage to its developing eye.

There has been some research that has shown that the use of night lights increases Myopia in human infants Source. Now this research might not translate to cats (ie. they have better low light sensitivity, thicker eyelids...). However it is my philosophy that as animals are growing up they need to be exposed to nature's rythyms and changes (light, temperature etc), so that they can deal with them when they become and adult.

Your girlfriend is setting up the cat for dependency.

If your cat is an adult, just ignore what I have typed.

I don't leave the lights on for our cats. There is a light in the hallway by the kids room that gets turned down to very dim, and a fluorescent light that's on in the kitchen near the bathroom, but that's to keep US from walking into stuff.

Wow you have a lot to learn. It doesn't matter if she's right. Pick your battles. Leave the damn light on.
