Least expensive semi-reliable web hosting that allows forum software?

Is there some web hosting service out there that is cheap and will allow me to run a couple of low bandwith forums.

Seeing as one is for work so not to clog up the e-mail system and the other is for my wife's webcomic I doubt either of them will generate any massive amounts of bandwith. Is there any place that will do this for say $30 a year?

Also is PHPBB the best freeware forum software?

um... 7.5GB is per month. And you can probably fit dozens and dozens of phpbb installs with 350mb of storage.

my son just set up a phpbbs forum at freepgs.com, for a 3.00 one time fee (allegedly, anyway)..

he just did it last week, so I can't say whether it's great or not but he's happy right now..

Unless someone thinks ripplehost isn't that good I'm thinking of signing up for their $24.95 a year plan.

I always recommend DeviousTrap. He has great services (all you need for phpBB and more) for VERY reasonable rates. PM him on these forums and he'll hook you up.

BTW, I speak from experience, he hosts my site and does an excellent job.

There are lots of people on AT who have hosting. Myself being one of them. However, some of us don't actually charge to host other people's sites.

Why does that matter at all? You can install any one of those manually with little to no effort.

I partially agree with you and minendo.

InvisionBoard and phpBB are both FREE forum software programs. I prefer a manual install which takes about 9 minutes but with Fantastico you can install it in about 2 seconds.

RippleHost.com should meet your needs but please remember "You get what you pay for".

With their $24.99/yr plan you should easily be able to fit TWO phpBB forums into that plan.

I didn't mean to come off like I knew what the hell I was doing. I learned by reading readmes. Installing gallery sounds difficult but reading the readme makes it easy.

When you say you get what you pay for, do you mean it's going to slow to a stop and be down a lot? If so how often and how bad?
I rather doubt they'll backup the databases in case they become corrupted. I imagine a service that backs up the databases probably costs a small fortune.

Edit: As for fantastico $90 for one license or $166 for two licenses is more than I can really spend. I'm sure I can set it up myself.

Just do your own backups. cPanel makes them easy to download.

You can easily backup your entire web site (including forums and MySQL databases) using the cPanel control panel.

I think Ripplehost is a pretty good deal. I used them about a year ago and wasn't all that impressed. However, I put up another site about a week ago and I was happy to see everything had improved vastly. The cPanel is good stuff and takes care of most all your needs.

I was on ripplehost for 3 of my sites for the last year. The uptime was decent especially for the price ($5/year). But recently Alan has been a big jerk. Not to mention you basically get ZERO support from him. Right now I host all 3 of my sites plus a few others with an account at Made2Own . Rick is a great guy (the guy that runs the hosting) and is very reachable when you have issues. I also recomend DeviousTrap's hosting. When I was looking around for a new host, he went out of his way to help me find one. Unfortunately I had already committed to Rick.

BTW, Made2Own has Fantastico.

One of my accounts is on ripplehost. It use to be down 2-3days per month. (That's almost 10%!!!)
But for the price--I couldn't complain. Recently it's been much better.

Thanks for the input. I wish Dixiesys was still offering cheap hosting. With the exception of a couple I have a friend hosting, I have all my domains with Dixiesys.

Trying to decide between Rossman's recommended site, dartworth's hosting, and ripplehost.

I would consider consolidating into one resellers account which gives you the most control and flexibility. Also with a resellers account you can host unlimited domains and you get your own personalized name servers (ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com) for FREE.

Reseller accounts start at $5/mo and up.
