It just takes time and patience. I've been playing consoles for about 3 years (was a PC gamer before), and I still can't get used to the feel of the Xbox One controller. The joysticks feel tiny and too sensetive but there are really no other options, so I have to get used to it. It's getting easier, but I'm still innacurate in a clutch situation due to the controller :/

I was awful, but it's like riding a bike, eventually it becomes second nature. Controllers are in between walking and riding a bike, maybe a tricycle.

As far as multi is concerned as long as everybody has the controller it's all fine (and most do, though at least one device allows mouse/keyboard on a console).

Controller is like riding a bike with square wheels.

No matter how good you get at it, round wheels are still better.

A mouse sucks for sports games, platformers, and action games like god of war. A keyboard is only on or off so it is ill suited to games that require subtile movements on an analog stick as well.

As a PC gamer, I am finding it extremely difficult, frustrating even to use consoles. I tried in the past, and gave up, selling my 360 and PS3. Now I was able to snag a 360 for cheap, and want to try again. I tried playing Gears of War today, but gave up in frustration after 5 minutes. I am lucky if I actually manage to shoot something once out of 10 times. Yeah, its THAT bad. Sometimes I end up going sideways when I want to go forward, and sometimes I end up switching guns when I just wanted to move somewhere.

I understand practice makes perfect, but are there any other games that you feel helped YOU develop the necessary dexterity, or whatever it is that's needed to use a controller?

Thanks.

Even though it's 3rd person cover shooter, the shooting mechanics closely resemble a FPS when you're aiming. The only way I could ever get good with a controller in these games or FPS was during college when I didn't have a gaming PC anymore. How that I have both consoles and PC, it's very hard to play any shooter with a controller. I tried playing CoD with my brother recently on the console and couldn't do anything because it was so awkward, but I used to be able to whoop him ;)

for every other game where accuracy and APM is not curcial. choice is yours.

for fps and strategy where accuracy and high APM is crucial. keyboard/mouse owns.

just imagine console BF4 and pc BF4 were cross platform. consoles players would be getting owned left and right. would not even be funny.

I feel your pain. I'm absolutely horrible with a controller. My hat goes off to anyone that is proficient with one. I use a XIM, and although it's definitely not 1:1, it's pretty damn close.

Racing games...tried DiRT 2 on PC (came free with my video card),and it was not very pleasant.

Oh yeah...I forgot about racers. Don't use my PC for any of those games though. Maybe if project cars ever releases...

also throw in fighters. they are terrible for fighters, although i do know there is a couple top level players that use keyboards.

Really? I wouldn't think that too bad, since fighters typically get played from a one-mode-of-input D-Pad. I guess the main concern I'd have with fighting games on a keyboard would be extra keys that got in the way.

There are the Rayman games on the 360, which are just as good if not better than the Nintendo platformers.

I don't consider the 2D and 3D platformer to really be the same since the former can easily be played on a D-pad. If you actually want to learn to be fully comfortable with joysticks to excel at a game, you're going to need to play games like Super Mario Galaxy or Banjo-Kazooie, where having tight control in a 3D space requires good control of the joystick to survive. Games like Assassin's Creed which people try to peddle as platformers are really more action games.

I was (still am) in the same boat.. One thing I will say, Pick a different GAME!!!! GOW annoyed the living hell out of me with its Velcro wall crap, stick., ok i want to move.. ah.. damn, ah.. ok i moved, damn now im stuck to another wall. My first console FPS (that had OK controls) was halo, much like the rest of the world.. oh i had played all those before, but halo got it as close to good as its going to get on Pads. then I played it on the PC.. not a good thing, you understand how diffent a console game and PC (same game) is. (and this is not a console bash, just a fact, play um both) enemies, etc, where all way easier on the console, also, most if not all have Aim help. when your used to doing it, its REALLY hard to get a grasp of just being in a close area, the console will do the rest.. understandable as you have the fixed turning rate, so you are gimped buy that if you are used to PC's and 180's in a second.. many have a button that does 180 for you.. to bad a 160 is needed sometimes..

I kept at it, still not even remotely good compared to some good console players. And I KNOW you can get damn good with a console, as good as with a Mouse/Keyboard, i have seen it. I just doubt us long term PC users will ever do that.

Halo was about teh only one i played till the 3 and 360.. with so many i jumped back in GoW was my first .. i was so frustrated i didn't touch my 360 for almost a year. it wasnt that i sucked at the game, i sucked at controlling it, and after years of feeling totally in control, only your bad decisions to screw you up, it was HARD to deal with. Dying because I couldn't let go of a static gun, turn and engage a guy walking up behind me.. I went to some simpler games BulletWitch (i liked it.. so what if its consider a bad game) Earth Defence Force 2017 (so damn much mindless fun) after playing these simpler games i got better, and could play awhile as they are not complicated, pretty much just shooting galleries that ramp up slowly. Since then i have beat all the 360 halo's and GOW.. Im not anywhere near good even, but i can play um and the frustration level is much smaller now..

its just time, but try an easier game.. without 30 button combo's.. shoot and duck and jump.. concentrate on the shooting.. an aiming then add all that other shit.

It's so weird to me to see struggle with Gears, but I guess it helps that I have played it since the beginning. You just gotta try something else.

If you've been spoiled by mouse control there is no getting use to analog sticks and their awkward press and hold still acrobatics, the auto rubber band need to move without input to force you back to level since recentering the view isn't possible (eg picking up the mouse) and arbitrary slow fixed turn rates defined by the game instead of your wrist. Stick turning is the same as keyboard turning IMO and you'll never get good at it because its inherently flawed anyway. Its only "good" relative to other stick and keyboard turners.

Just focus on enjoying single player games and stories and non shooters on the couch and avoid competitive online versus modes and you'll be able to tolerate sticks.

Which is really what consoles should be for anyway. Serious competitive play should only be on kb+mouse anyway, the twitch reflex and flick and stop on a sub pixel speed and precision of a mouse is just a whole different world.

IMO online shooters don't even belong on consoles and are dragging down innovation and fun in the console space. FPS explosion on consoles is not only producing FPS inferior to PC but their popularity is also diminishing games and genres where consoles excel and are superior to PCs. They should have stayed on PC.

 VERY well put

Why not just use a kb/mouse on the console for the FPS's and use the controller for sports games, arcades, etc? That's what I do and it works.

Can't remember the exact name of the product I use, but I just plug keyboard and mouse into it and it does all the work. Massive carnage on the console FPS's when facing folks using controllers...

XIM3/XIM Edge.

Yup, that's it. I use the newer version and my kids use the older one. You can't imagine the number of times we've been asked to leave a game because of the K:D ratios.

By the way, it's about as close to 1:1 in terms of movement with the newer version. I've had my daughter on a controller in the same game as I and we've observed the turning with the controller vs. the mouse and there's no perceivable difference. The XIM is just as fast on reaction and input as using the controller is.

I played PC FPS games for many years (mostly Quake 3 / Battlefield series) and was so accustomed to playing with the mouse/keyboard that I had a hard time picking up a console FPS until I found out about XIM3.

XIM4 is supposed to be released in the next couple of months and I'll get one for my Xbox One.

LOL true, so unfair :

Those poor bastards.

Controller is absolutely hands-down better for racing, fighting, sports, platformers, stuff like that.

Mouse/KB absolutely dominates for FPS though. I'm not a terrible controller player, I can fairly easily beat Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, but I can't bring myself to play FPS with a controller even with practice. It's like racing a unicycle with a flat tire after getting off a Triumph Speed Triple.

I had a XIM Edge at one point, and it was okay. The problem was that the mouse felt kind of... "mushy"? It was definitely a lot better for me than using a controller, but I still didn't like it nearly as much as using a direct keyboard and mouse on a PC.

I can play competitively just fine on CoD and Battlefield online on console and on PC. It's easy.

Keep at it man and it wont take long before it becomes natural. I was a 100% PC gamer as well but love my PS3 now. Of course some games like FPS will never be as accurate than mouse+kb but sometimes they are more fun (cinematic) on a big TV and hifi system. I love third person, sports etc. now on consoles eg. GTA V, Tomb Raider, NBA 2K etc. I recently started playing Borderlands 2 and its the first FPS I love on console so you could give that a try.

kinda odd, I started with Gears as well when I got back into console gaming a few years back and that game just felt natural with a controller. I, actually, played it on pc as well and it felt awkward with kb/m. Now COD, whoa, I was getting pwned in mw1. Wasn't till I started seriously playing mw2 before I really got the handle of using a controller for fps.
