Just bought a guitar a few days ago. I've been practicing for the past hour or so and man is it painful! Anyone else with similar experience?

Everyone does. Just wait until you start to play your fingers raw.

Stevie Ray Vaughan would play with heavy guage strings and when his fingers would go raw, he'd put super glue on them in order to keep playing. :)

No pain, no gain.

Eventually you will develop calluses thick enough so it doesnt hurt... hell, i could touch a red hot stove element with the tips of my fingers and it wouldn't hurt..

Picks only help one hand, the fret hand is the one that needs callouses bad!

The worst part is that my callouses are still not developed enough to keep guitar strings from slicing through. Stupid tiny strings of doom!

picks have nothing to do with the finger pain experianced by pushing down the strings with the non strumming hand.

Hang in there, it can only get better.

Yes, it sure is.. After another few days, you'll develop calouses.. and the pain will go away.

And then use some fingernail clippers and chop those calluses off! My friend, who was one of the best guitar players i know, did this. I thought about it.... then i was like, nah, too lazy, i don't want to do that all over again.

I only play for 15-30mins a day.
My calluses are coming a long nicely.
Haven't experienced any pain...

you have obviously never played any sort of stringed instrument
not only would it mess your precision up, you wouldn't be able to press the string fully against the finger board which would kill any useful sonic properties of whatever instrument you are playing(depending on thickness of gloves)

I went through the same process a good 6 years ago (wow! It has been a while). Just keep at it and the pain will subside in a week or two. Practice makes perfect. :D

You tend to develop thicker skin on the fingers after a while. ;) Either that or they're not as soft after a while.

Just remember to keep practicing, cause if you dont play for a while and then pick it back up, it will hurt again.

Just a quick question, where would you guys recommend me to get a guitar if I just want to start learning? and what guitar do you think is good for newbies?

Check your local pawn shop, they usually have a decent selection, and for somewhat cheap, plus you get to try it out and see if its comfortable first there.

If you want to order online, Musicians Friend has a good selection, and they have some starter combos for pretty cheap.

Remember, chicks love a guy with calloused hands... they especially like it when you rub them on their breasts.

:D

(something my rowing coach told me)
